Shattered Illusions: Love, Lies, and Redemption

Chapter 168

Remington’s face turned even more grim.

Not scared of him, Lizetta stood her ground, “Beat it! Evelina has to drink this bottle of water today, no ifs, ands, or buts!”

There was no way Remington would let anything happen to the baby inside Evelina. Upstodatee from Novel(D)ra/m/a.O(r)g

Standing still, his figure was solid as a rock, but his gaze was fixed on the bottle of water in Lizetta’s hand.

“What’s in it?”

Lizetta chuckled, and tiptoed closer to whisper in the man’s car, “Relax, it won’t kill her, and definitely won’t harm the little treasure she’s carrying!”

Her voice was soft yet chillingly cold. As she leaned in, a wave of the familiar, crisp scent of gardenias brushed past Remington’s ear.

Remington’s thoughts swayed uncontrollably, and as the woman stepped back, he reached out again and grabbed her wrist.

Underneath his palm, her wrist was delicate, and her skin was warm and smooth, which stirred emotions within him and brought up inappropriate intimate images in his mind.

Even though he had resolved to let her go, his body now craved her presence even more.

How could he have such a weak defense against her slightest provocation; Remington’s Adam’s apple bobbed, and he lowered his head to whisper in Lizetta’s ear.

“If you want to vent, slap her a few more times, but she can’t drink that sleeping potion, as it could harm the baby.”

He was giving in.

Lizetta was somewhat surprised that he would allow her to hit Evelina.

But Lizetta wasn’t grateful; instead, she felt even colder.

This also meant that Remington was fully aware that Evelina was the one who had drugged her.

He cared so much about the baby inside Evelina, but what about her baby? Didn’t he fear it might be affected by the drugs?

Considering what she had found out that sleeping pills could potentially affect the development of a baby’s nervous system, Lizetta felt her heart twisted in pain, so much so that she was determined to make Evelina suffer the same fate to calm her anger.

Lizetta yanked her hand back and stepped away, while staring coldly at Remington.

“I won’t hit her, I just want an eye for an eye! Not a bit more, not a bit less! Are you gonna move or not?”

Remington’s handsome face was stern; he was surprised by Lizetta’s stubbornness.

She had already slapped Evelina twice. He had said it was okay for her to slap Evelina a few more times to vent, but Lizetta still insisted on pushing the envelope.

Frowning, the man said, “Lizetta, why take it out on an innocent child? Enough is enough”

Fretta, watching him protect Evelina and blame her, couldn’t help but laugh bitterly.

Her eyes suddenly burned red, as if bleeding, and she said firmly.

“Remington, don’t force me to hate you!”

For the first time, Lizetta’s clear eyes filled with intense anger when she looked at Remington.

She stood there, poised to sever ties with him.

Her gaze was like a knife, thrusting straight into the softest part of Remington’s heart.

Remington’s expression shifted, and his face paled slightly.

After a moment of silence, feeling a strange sense of alarm rise within him, he spoke again with a dry voice. “I’ll decide. You can slap her five more times.”

Evelina felt like she was carrying a golden goose, even somewhat schadenfreude.

Remington would never let anything happen to her unborn child, and with Lizetta lacking evidence, this fuss would only lead to a fallout between husband and wife, embarrassing herself and making Remington loathe her more, there was no real advantage to be gained.

Only a fool like Lizetta would act so recklessly. But Evelina’s smugness was cut short when she heard what Remington said.

Evelina’s eyes widened in disbelief, “Remi! Why? I don’t want to be slapped; I didn’t do anything! It’s my sister who’s framing me, I refuse! This isn’t fair to me!”

She tried to reach for Remington’s sleeve, but the man turned sharply and barked with a stern voice.

“Shut up!”
