Chapter 687 The Source of Joseph’s Endless Torment
Joseph exerted considerable force, leaving red marks on Chloe's wrist. Annoyance flashed across her face as she said, "Who cares about coming here? If it weren't for something important, I would never come here for the rest of my life."
Joseph's face turned pale with anger and responded by tightening his grip. He seemed intent on punishing her. Chloe winced in pain and took a quick step forward, viciously stomping on his shoe with her pointed heel a few times. Yet, Joseph remained surprisingly composed and side-eyed her.
"Had enough?" he asked.
Seeing him seemingly unaffected, Chloe's interest quickly waned. "What's with the tough act? It should hurt unless you're dead."
"You're right.”
Joseph's fingertips hid the red marks on Chloe's wrist. She forcefully pulled away, throwing him an indifferent expression. "Are you done, Mr. Joseph? Not every woman is like Xavia who throws themselves at any man they see. I'm only here today to deliver something to an employee of mine."
Joseph's gaze intensified as he shifted his attention to Frieda who stood a few meters away. Their eyes met, but the distance prevented them from discerning the expression in each other's eyes. The trembling of Frieda's lips hinted at something unusual, but she quickly averted her gaze, lowered her head, and straightened her back.
Meanwhile, Joseph continued to gaze deeply at Frieda. He asked Chloe, "That woman over there’s the employee you mentioned?”
"Yes, and I have no reason to lie to you. I have no interest in playing games with you.”
Chloe had seen through him. She understood that beneath his striking exterior lay a former shell of himself. Inner beauty was the true symbol of beauty.
Joseph chuckled and shifted his approach, playfully pinching her slender waist as he leaned closer. "But you did pursue me five years ago, didn't you?"
Chloe's memories resurfaced. She blinked, but her expression remained indifferent. "People make mistakes. Can you guarantee a hundred percent return on investments?"
"So now you've set your sights on Noah," he stated, more as a certainty than a question.
Chloe raised an eyebrow and did not deny it. "So what if I have? Noah is wealthy and younger than you. Why not seize the opportunity?"
Joseph's expression suddenly stiffened and his blood rushed to his head. Age was evidently a sore spot for him. Noah was currently in his youthful prime, the epitome of trendy, young heartthrobs.
Chloe noticed the change in Joseph's icy demeanor and sneered. She shook the car keys in her hand to signify her intent to leave. However, her keen peripheral vision caught a glimpse of a figure in the distance.
Her eyes flashed, and she chose to go on the offensive instead of retreating. She looked eyes with Joseph as she hooked her fingers around his tie. Her voice turned soft and coquettish like a playful kitten. "Oh, are you jealous? Don't like the idea of me being with Noah?"
Chloe carried a faint fragrance, and what struck Joseph the most was that this scent was exactly the same as it was five years ago. It was the source of his endless daily torment. In seconds, his gaze flickered and his heart thumped fiercely. It was as if the person standing before him was not human but an enchanting seductress.
His composure crumbled and was torn apart by an internal struggle, and his mouth acted faster than any other part of his body. He longed to confess to her that yes, he did not like her being with Noah. He had been waiting for her to return, so how could she be with someone else?
"I—"
"Chloe! Let go of Joe!"
Xavia's voice reverberated with anger—sharp and loud. It unsettled all those who heard it. Her interruption cut Joseph's words short. Content © copyrighted by NôvelDrama.Org.
Chloe smiled brightly, unafraid in the slightest. "What's the matter?"
"Aren’t you ashamed of touching Joe in public? Are you still trying to cling to him?" Xavia's anger surged, she pointed her finger accusingly at Chloe as she berated her.
Chloe nonchalantly shrugged off the accusations. "All that I'm doing now, you did them five years ago, so don't act like you’re better than me. I know exactly what kind of person you are."
