Chapter 318
Chapter 318
Jamie stretched out her arms to ask for a hug. Queenie then gave her a hug and stood up immediately
after. "You're too reckless. I was so worried about you!"
"Mom, I know I was wrong. Please forgive me." Jamie looked at Queenie with pleading eyes.
Queenie had no choice but to say, "Fine, I'll forgive you this time, but there will not be a next."
"Thank you, mom! Give me a kiss!"
Jamie spoke mischievously with her eyes blinking as she laid in bed.
Wayne was watching from behind in a daze; he had never seen Jamie acting like this. Jamie had
always done whatever she wanted to. If others disagree with her, she would force others to agree with
her in an unpleasant way. There was no need for her to speak in such a coquettish way.
"Look at you!"
Seeing Jamie act that way, Queenie's immediately broke into a smile.
Jamie really knew how to coax her.
"Mom, since you have forgiven me, you should leave now. Sleeping too late at night will affect your
complexion. You spend tens of thousands of dollars on facial treatments to maintain your bright and
beautiful skin. I would feel guilty if you don't get your beauty sleep because of me."
Jamie knew that Queenie wasn't mad at her anymore, thus she changed her plans and tried to
persuade her to go home.
She was worried if Queenie stayed on, she would reprimand Wayne, leaving him in a difficult situation.
Although Queenie was tricked by Jamie, in her head she was still clear on the situation. When she
heard Jamie asking her to leave, she immediately refused. "No. Since I'm already here today, let's
make things clear."
Queenie was never a woman who was easy to deal with; she would definitely not let Jamie do things
her own way.
"Auntie, I..."
"Don't say things like you will be good to Jamie. I don't want to hear that."
Queenie interrupted Wayne before he could finish his words.
"Mom! Isn't it enough that he would be good to me? Men nowadays are not loyal, they cheat and mess
around. It's enough that Wayne will treat me well. What else do you want him to do?"
Jamie knew where her mum was going, her ultimate purpose there that night was to make Wayne
break up with Jamie.
"Treat you well? You shouldn't believe a man's words so easily. What's more, our family isn't any
ordinary family. If a man only had to treat you well to marry you, then any man in the world would
qualify for that."
"There is another condition, that is, I like him as well. In this case, there is only one man, isn't it?"
Jamie would definitely think of a way to counter Queenie's questions.
"Jamie, the man you like will change in the future. You may like him now, but it is uncertain in the
future. Marriage is a lifetime commitment. If you don't have a good eye, you will end up like his sister,
getting married again and again."
The "sister" Queenie referred to was Coralie.
Back then, Coralie met Howard and married the wrong man. A lot of things happened after that, and
people were not oblivious about it.
"Auntie Holland, my sister..."
"Mom! It's not related at all. Why are you involving others in this?"
Before Wayne could say anything, Jamie spoke up first. She knew that Wayne would be furious if
Queenie said some inappropriate and disrespectful words about Coralie.
"Well, Wayne, I'll give you one year's time. If what you are doing for a living can satisfy me, then I'll
agree to let you both be together. If not, I'll arrange a marriage for her with someone else."
Queenie knew very well that since Jamie was here, she couldn't do or say anything. Jamie would
definitely get unhappy if she went a little too far, so all she could do was speak her thoughts. Content property of NôvelDra/ma.Org.
She did not intend to be too hard on Wayne either.
Forcing Wayne into a difficult circumstance would make Jamie upset and she did not want to hurt her
relationship with her daughter because of an 'outsider'.
"Mom! One year is too short!"
Jamie raised an objection immediately.
"You're already 26 years old. How many more years do you want? Until you're 30?"
"Auntie, I agree to that."
Wayne, who had been quiet for a while, broke his silence and agreed to Queenie's conditions.
He knew that if he was to negotiate, his value as a man would further depreciate, and Queenie would
despise him even more.
"Wayne, do you think that you were born with a silver spoon in your mouth? Besides, do you know the
standard of my mom's satisfaction? What if she disapproves of you by then?"
Jamie stopped him as soon as he agreed to her mother's request.
Queenie's request was too general, there were way too many kinds of jobs and industries; what was it
that would fulfill her conditions? A certain income or a specific position?
"Wayne, I hope you can understand me. As a mother, I hope that my daughter will live a happy life in
the future."
Queenie explained her standpoint to Wayne with sincerity.
"Auntie, I understand that. I will work hard."
Wayne was filled with confidence.
As he was working in the bank, his performance was key. As long as he worked hard for a year, he
would get a good increment.
At that moment, Wayne began calculating.
......
The week after the one-year promise would be a Monday.
When Coralie returned home, Hera had just finished preparing dinner while Hendric was washing his
hands. The three of them were waiting for Wayne to come home.
It was late and Wayne had yet to return, Coralie called him but he did not answer his phone. She
thought that he was working overtime, so she didn't put any thoughts into it.
Wayne had been working overtime ever since he made the promise with Queenie. Coralie supported
him for that, hoping that Queenie would perceive her younger brother in a new perspective.
It was already late at night around 11 and Hendric and Hera had already fallen asleep.
"Bang bang bang!"
There was a vigorous rap on the door.
"Who is it?"
Coralie was startled by the noise. She put on a robe and went to the living room, looking through the
peephole on the door.
The lights in the corridor outside were still on, but there was no one out there.
Because of the incident with Howard in the past, Coralie had been frightened since then. After waiting
for a while, no one answered so she asked loudly, "Who is it?"
"Coralie, it's me."
It was Wayne's voice.
When Coralie opened the door, she saw Wayne, sitting by the door, reeking of alcohol.
"Wayne, what happened?" Coralie helped Wayne get in the house hastily. "What's wrong? Did you
quarrel with Jamie?"
The last time Wayne got drunk like this was when Jamie got engaged with another man.
"Coralie." Wayne sat on the sofa, leaning on it as he looked at the ceiling, it took him a while before he
finally opened up, "I've lost my job."
"You lost your job?"
"Yeah."
"You were doing well, weren't you? A few days ago, you said that your leader was going to promote
you. Why did you suddenly lose your job?"
Just a few days ago, Wayne had said that his leader was really satisfied with his performance and
wanted to promote him.
"Last Friday, the auditors came for a spot check out of the blue. After two days of investigation,
something happened to our leader. In order to keep himself safe, he used me as a shield and put the
blame on me..."
Wayne sat there, in complete exhaustion.
This was the unspoken norm in the corporate world. Sacrificing the pawns to protect the general. From
a certain point of view, Wayne was just unlucky.
"Then, what did your leader say about you?"
Coralie thought that usually when such a thing happened, after dismissing Wayne, they would find him
another job instead.
