What Separates Me and You by Victoria Wilson
Chapter 34 I Want to Keep the Child
Lewis picked up his coat and glanced at Sierra. “Anything else?”
Sierra pouted, looking at him with a hint of frustration. “Can’t you stay?”
“No,” he answered firmly and added, “not tonight.”
Sierra gritted her teeth in annoyance. Knowing that he would not change his mind, she released her grip on Lewis with a huff.
“Forget it; go ahead and leave.”
She had stayed up late to keep him company because she thought that he wouldn’t leave at this hour. All rights © NôvelDrama.Org.
Who knew that she was just deluding herself?
Sierra realized that Lewis had the ability to make her experience a rollercoaster of emotions in the span of a few seconds.
For a moment, she would feel that he cared about her, and in the next second, her hopes would be dashed.
If Sierra didn’t have a sound state of mind, she would have been driven crazy by his volatile behavior!
Lewis left without even looking back. It was as if the gentle, meticulous man who had tended to her wounds was just an illusion.
At the community clinic, Josephine was propped up on a bed, her lips blue from the cold.
Beside her, there were two police officers and the security guard from last night.
“I heard the sound of breaking glass while I was patrolling last night, that’s when I found her. After bringing her here, I called the police. That’s everything that happened,” the security guard explained.
He had almost left the park last night. At her wit’s end, Josephine found a stone on the ground and threw it at a window nearby. The security guard heard the noise and found her lying on the ground.
The person whose window was broken also showed up. It was an old woman who was demanding compensation from Josephine.
The police placed Josephine’s suitcase at the end of the bed and asked, “Is this your suitcase?”
Josephine lifted her head and looked at the young police officer in front of her. She nodded.
“Remember to keep it safe. Your ID and other documents are inside. Now that we have a general idea of what happened, we will go after those two men as soon as possible. This is the address of the disability welfare center in Elysium. If you have nowhere to go, you can seek help there.”
Josephine stared blankly at the business card in his hand for a moment.
Then, she reached out to take it and gestured her thanks.
The police officer turned to the woman whose window was damaged. “I’ve checked the window at your house, and it’s merely cracked. You can fix it up with some glue, so there’s no need to replace it. Since she did it out of desperation, the state will pay for the damage. What do you think?”
The woman’s gaze had a hint of disdain, but she didn’t let it show on her face.” Alright, I’m just really unlucky that this happened to me. Why did she have to smash. my window?”
Josephine listened to the woman’s complaints, and she hung her head.
“Let’s just leave it at that,” the young policeman said to Josephine, “I’ll cover your medical expenses for now. If you have any clues or questions, just come to the police station.”
Josephine nodded.
After the police left, the woman stayed behind.
She stood in front of Josephine and said, “Hey, dumb woman, you have to compensate me for my broken window.”
The woman was in her forties and didn’t look like a vicious person. However, her vulgar tone gave her away.
Josephine endured the pain and bent down to lift the suitcase. She opened it and gestured for the woman to take whatever she wanted.
Josephine did not have any money. Since Lewis was the one who bought all her clothes, they should be worth a tidy sum.
The woman sifted through the clothes in Josephine’s suitcase. After examining them, she found that the clothes had excellent workmanship.
“I should let you know that I spent three thousand dollars on my window. These clothes of yours are worth at most a thousand dollars!”
The woman muttered as she gathered all the clothes in Josephine’s suitcase.
“Forget it, I’ll let you go out of pity. Don’t go around damaging other people’s property next time, okay?”
Josephine looked at her empty suitcase, there were only two pieces of innerwear left.
She smiled wryly and kept silent.
The woman had no idea that the clothes in her hands were worth as much as the downpayment for her house.
Either way, Josephine wasn’t in the mood to care about her clothes now, she was more worried about the child in her belly.
After everyone left, Josephine left the room to find a doctor.
She was in a small community clinic with only two floors. The first floor was for outpatients, and the second floor was for patients on drips or admission.
There were only five doctors working there, and they worked in shifts.
Josephine went to the outpatient clinic and saw that there were no other patients. inside, so she knocked on the door and went in.
The doctor was stunned when he saw her.
When Josephine was brought in last night, some of the other doctors were called in to help. That’s why he recognized her.
Josephine was supposed to be transferred to a larger hospital, but since Josephine. had no family, they had no choice but to let her stay there for treatment.
“How are you feeling?” the doctor asked, pushing a pen and paper in front of Josephine.
Josephine picked up the pen and wrote on the paper, “Doctor, how is my baby’s
condition?”
The doctor read her note and went silent for a while. “How should I put it? Your baby’s pretty lucky to be alive. However, it’s very weak right now. Even if you manage to keep this pregnancy, I foresee
multiple issues later on. You might even suffer a miscarriage. My advice is to terminate the pregnancy, which would be better for both you and the baby.”
When Josephine heard the doctor’s words, she was at a loss. She didn’t know
whether to feel happy that the child was still alive or sad about what the doctor said. She continued writing, “Why?”
The doctor patiently explained, “Your baby is not developing properly, which may be related to your poor nutrition and diet. Besides, you have lost a lot of blood. That’s why, it’s better to have an abortion now. Otherwise, you will suffer even more if you have to undergo abortion later.”
Josephine pursed her lips. She did not agree with what the doctor said.
Everything she had done was for this baby, and the child was her last hope.
If she had decided to abort the baby, she wouldn’t have smashed the window last night out of desperation.
She would choose to die with this child in her belly.
The doctor tried to persuade her otherwise, but Josephine wrote insistently, “I want to keep the child.”
He frowned. “You are a stubborn young woman. If you want to keep the baby, you will suffer long–term consequences in the future.”
Josephine nodded and wrote, “I understand. Thank you, Doctor. I will take full responsibility for any consequences.”
Seeing her determination, the doctor sighed. “Alright then. Since you want to keep the baby, I won’t persuade you any longer. Take a rest and leave the clinic. With your condition, you need to go to a
larger hospital for treatment. We can’t provide you with the adequate care you need. Do you have any money?”
Josephine was taken aback. She had no money, not even a penny. Her phone was still in the mansion’s storage room.
In a dilemma, she stood outside the community clinic with her empty suitcase. After considering it for a long time, she decided to go back and get her phone.
Josephine walked along the road leading up to the mansion. Due to the pain in her lower abdomen, she couldn’t walk too fast. It took her until four in the afternoon to get back to the mansion by taking long breaks in between.
At this time, Lewis should not be at home.
Josephine keyed in the password to the door without any hesitation and entered the mansion.
She quickly went to the storage room and found her phone under a pile of books.
Josephine took her phone and went upstairs to find a charger.
However, as soon as she opened the door, she heard the sound of running water
coming from the bathroom.
