Chapter 308
Chapter 308
Even when he was sick, Brett's grip was still really strong. He was holding onto Liam's collar with his hand, the veins on the back of his hand popping out. If he used this much force on someone's neck, they'd probably be choked to death.
For a moment, Liam had difficulty breathing, undoubtedly frightened.
"Why didn't you keep a close eye on her and just let someone take her away!" Brett gritted his teeth, his eyes fierce, and tears welling up in his eyes, looking like a dying prisoner struggling desperately.
Liam looked at the insane-looking Brett, his hands shaking badly, and his calves trembling. His body slided down involuntarily. If it weren't for Brett gripping his collar, he'd probably already have collapsed on the ground.
"Where did they take her? I want to find her." Brett asked.
Liam shook his head, taking a deep breath and said, "President Windham, it's no use. Izabella was taken away by her brother."
"You mean Lucas?" Brett asked.
Liam replied with difficulty, "Yes."
"What does Lucas count for? He's never taken care of Izabella. He's yelled at her and beaten her. What right does he have to take her away!" Brett said.
Even Liam couldn't help but found Brett's words a bit ridiculous at this point.
"President Windham, no matter how bad Lucas is, he's still Izabella's only family. There's no one more qualified to take her away than him. On the other hand, you're just her ex-husband. You're the least qualified person to keep her." Liam said.
At this moment, Liam was not afraid of anything, even if it meant getting beaten up. He had been with Brett long enough and had deceived him plenty. He didn't want to deceive himself any longer.
Brett's breathing faltered, and his tongue seemed to have been stung by something. He reflexively held his breath, his eyes dim and lifeless, as if he had lost his soul.
The atmosphere was tense, and no one spoke. The dim, cold room felt like a silent, lonely grave.
"All I have left is her body. Why won't they even leave her body with me? Where did she go?" Brett squatted down, hugging his head, and randomly tearing at his messy hair.
With a keen eye, Liam noticed that there were several strands of gray hair mixed in with Brett's hair. He was not even 30 yet, but losing Izabella had aged him several years in just a few days.
Liam spoke hoarsely, "President Windham, I dreamed of the Lady last night. She said she was cold..."
As he watched Brett lift his bloodshot eyes, Liam choked up and continued in a muffled voice, "Just think about it, she doesn't even want to enter your dreams. How much she must hate you... You know she was afraid of the cold when she was alive, yet you locked her in this cold room. She's been resenting you, but she can't speak now. President Windham, let both her and yourself go."
Brett's expression was stone-like. His blood-red eyes stared as tears flow continuously down his cheeks.
Izabella was his life, how could he possibly let her go?
"You always say you'll make it up to her, but you don't even know what she wants. President Windham, all she ever wanted was to leave you." Liam said.
Nathaniel and Liam seemed to have made an agreement, attacking Brett from both sides. He was like falling into an abyss, with wolves in front of him and tigers behind him, tearing him apart at every step.
He could give up anything, but he couldn’t lose Izabella. Why couldn't she stay with him?
Brett leaned against the cold wall, curled up and hugging his aching head tightly. Sobbing sounds came from his throat.
An indescribable pain raged in his chest.
Liam watched as Brett sat on the floor, hands covering his face, tears seeping through his fingers and wetting his sleeves.
The only sound in the air was Brett's heavy and oppressive breathing. Liam watched him quietly for a while, then took out his phone and called the police station.
"I'd like to know if Izabella's body has been taken away? How is it being handled?” Liam asked.
Liam put the call on speaker, and Brett immediately lifted his head, a glimmer of hope in his eyes. He stared intently at Liam's phone, like a child whose beloved toy had been taken away and wanted to snatch it back but didn't dare to.
"Her family took her body away at noon." The police said.
Liam asked again, "Where did they take her?"
"Crematorium." The police answered.
Liam hesitated for a moment, not expecting Izabella's body to be sent directly to the crematorium.
She had been there since noon, and it was already four o'clock now. She had probably long turned into ashes. Liam looked down at Brett.
His face looked even worse than before, as if something was devouring his soul and losing all reason.
Brett still stared intently at Liam's phone until he heard him say "thank you" and hang up the call. As the screen turned off, Brett finally reacted.
In this cold winter, it was as if a bucket of cold water had been poured over him. His nerves tensed up even more, ready to snap.
Brett scrambled to his feet in a panic, "I have to find her. I have to find her." He took two steps, then his head spined and his legs went weak, causing him to stagger to his knees. He tried to stand but couldn't even crawl forward. All content © N/.ôvel/Dr/ama.Org.
He stared at his legs as he had a grown man's breakdown in an instant. He suddenly clenched his fist and violently pounded his thigh, shouting hoarsely, "Move! You are useless, Brett! You can't even see her one last time!"
He had used up all his strength, but his hand had no impact on his leg. It was as if his wrist had been snapped. He bit his lip, and Liam was frightened by his actions, quickly reaching out to stop him and tell him not to hurt himself.
Brett's body trembled nonstop, his throat dry and painful. It felt like his blood had dried up and solidified, making it hard to breathe.
"…President Windham, I'll take you to her."
Liam said something in front of him, but Brett only heard the last sentence.
Liam squatted down and hoisted Brett onto his back, running out the door and calling for the driver to leave the car at the entrance and headed towards the crematorium.
The driver knew there was no time to lose, watching Liam stuff Brett into the car and stepping on the gas immediately.
It usually took at least an hour to get to the crematorium from here. The driver tried his best to drive fast, even running a few red lights along the way, but it still took forty minutes to reach their destination.
Before the car could even come to a stop, Brett opened the door and jumped out, running toward the furnace.
Liam was right on his heels, watching Brett's wobbly figure.
At this moment, Brett still had a glimmer of hope, hoping that Izabella hadn't entered the incinerator yet, and her body was still lying intact in the crystal coffin.
However, when they asked the staff, they were still a step too late. Izabella's body had been incinerated and turned to ashes an hour ago.
Brett, trembling, asked, "Where did they take her?"
The staff replied, "Should be off to the seaside."
