Chapter 711
Chapter 711
Zain shrugged his shoulders.
“I had wanted to go see her, but she and her man were... Since it wasn't convenient, there was no point in me courting trouble.”
Veronique let out a chuckle before giving him an intent look. “Thank you, Mr. Bryne. I'll give your suggestion due consideration. It's just that seeking the Yablon family's assistance might not be easy. I'm not confident in convincing Mr. Yablon.”
Cocking a brow, Zain reminded her, “Bailey is someone extremely resourceful and well-connected. You can get her to help you. For your sake, I'm sure she'll storm over there and drag Cameron out.”
With that, he made his way to the door and added, “In the meantime, I'll continue researching the cancer cells and find a compound that will be capable of counterbalancing it. Once you have made your decision, come see me at the lab. You guys should focus on getting Cameron; I'll take care of the rest.”
“All right. Thank you.”
After watching Zain's silhouette disappear, Justin narrowed his eyes at Veronique as he asked, “Are you really going to do this?”
Veronique responded with a wry smile. “Justin, the chances of survival are seventy percent. Why shouldn't I go along with it? Am I supposed to accept death just like that?”
Justin was at a loss for words.
At the outdoor grounds of the medical base the next day, Bailey and Shannon were giving each other a farewell hug.
“Take good care of yourself. I pray that once you're fully recovered, you'll finally enjoy peace for the rest of your days.”
“Mmm-hmm. You too. No matter where you go after leaving Tarragon, remember to give me a call. Don't forget that you have a friend here in Hallsbay who'll always miss you.”
Raising her gaze, Shannon kept her tears at bay as she replied in a choked voice, “I will. Regardless of where I am, I'll never forget you.”
With that, she gently nudged Bailey away before heading into the flight terminal.
Just as he passed Bailey by, Holden stopped in his tracks and gave her a nod. “I'll be leaving Wendy and her son in your care while I'm gone. I'll return immediately once I've dealt with Shannon's affairs.”
Bailey cocked a brow as she teased, “I'll keep an eye on them only if you promise to do whatever I say going forward.”
While Holden was rendered speechless, Artemis threaded his arm around her waist. “Stop trying to make fun of him.”
Bailey then flashed a cheeky smile at Holden. “What are you waiting for? If you don't agree, I'll kick her out.”
Left without a choice, Holden bowed with a wry smile. “Fine. Just take care of them while I'm gone.”
His acquiescence triggered a triumphant laugh from her. “That's more like it. As long as she stays in the medical base and behaves, no one will lay a finger on her.”
Thereafter, Holden uttered a word of thanks before departing on his journey.
Once he was gone, Bailey wrapped her arms around Artemis' neck and looked up at him. “Take good care of yourself. I promise you that I won't leave home for no good reason and will focus on looking after the children. While I'm at it, I'll take good care of myself.”
Artemis responded by pinching her on the cheeks. “You shouldn't leave home even if it's important. Get one of our subordinates to take care of it. I'll be gone for half a month at the longest and a week at the shortest. I hope to see the glow return to your face once I'm back.”
“Okay. Go on now.”
After adjusting Bailey's mink coat for her, Artemis turned to Zeke. “Please take good care of her. I'll buy you a drink when I'm back.”
Zeke flashed a grin at him. “This will be the last time. Keeping an eye on her is such a pain.”
Bailey kicked him in jest. “Why are you complaining? You should be honored to have such a capable sister.”
Meanwhile, several small figures came up to them in the snow. Property belongs to Nôvel(D)r/ama.Org.
After releasing Bailey, Artemis leaned down to catch the little girl that threw herself at him.
“Daddy, since you're the leader of Tarragon, does that make me, your daughter, the princess?”
Artemis gave her forehead a peck before explaining softly, “It doesn't matter if you're the princess of Tarragon, as no one can change the fact that you're a princess of the Luther family. I'll be going away on business for a while, but once I return, I'll take you someplace fun.”
Amidst a soft sniffle, Susan leaned in and whispered into his ear, “If you break your promise, I'll get Daddy Eddy to marry Mommy.”
Artemis couldn't hold back his laughter. “You're such a cheeky girl.”
After placing his daughter in Zeke's arms, Artemis turned toward Maxton and Zayron. “Take good care of your mommy and sister.”
Zayron mumbled, “She should be counting her blessings when I'm not causing any trouble. Watching over her is just too much to ask.”
Maxton subsequently added, “She has already cleared out all the villains in the city. Considering how strong she is in battle, she doesn't need us to keep an eye on her at all. Instead, I'm worried about my future wife. Bailey's aggressive demeanor will definitely spark conflict with her daughter-in-law.”
The words caused Bailey to kneel down abruptly and hurl snowballs at her sons.
“You naughty boys, are you looking for trouble?”
“Come on! I dare you!”
Upon exchanging a quick glance, the brothers began to flee.
Cognizant that they were just trying to cheer her up, she played along with them by giving chase.
After giving his daughter's hair a tousle, Artemis said to Zeke, “I'm boarding the flight now. Stay in touch.”
“Got it.”
Inside the ward, Wendy watched the private jet take flight from the window. As it soared above the clouds, a sense of melancholy descended upon her.
It seems that the organization is more important to him than his family. Now that he has gone off despite my grievous injuries, it's clear to me how important I am to him. Holden, I don't want a love that's born out of sympathy. Back then, you made a cruel decision to leave both of us, putting us in harm's way. And now, you're abandoning us again, forcing us to hopelessly wait for your return. I... I no longer want to do so. That's why we should go our separate ways.
After watching the plane fade into the clouds, Bailey led the children back to the wards.
She ran into Justin the moment she stepped into the lobby.
“Justin, is Vero awake?”
“Yes, she is.”
When Bailey noticed the fruits he was holding, she figured that he had bought them for Veronique. “I'll go with you to her room.”
“Sure. Coincidentally, there's something I want to speak to you about.”
With that, both of them chatted as they walked.
Justin related Zain's proposal to her. “Do you think this plan will work?”
The idea was to counter the cancer with cancer while having the process accelerated with poison.
Upon hearing the question, Bailey stopped in her tracks. “I'll drop by the lab first and ask Zain about it. I'll join you in the ward after that.”
“Okay. If the plan is feasible, we'll have to trouble you to convince the heir of the family, Cameron Yablon, to help us.”
The Yablon family?
Bailey's brows furrowed.
The formulation of Soul Reaper—a poison no one can neutralize—is a testament to the Yablon family's unmatched skill in making poisons. Getting involved with them doesn't benefit us in any way. Instead, it will bring nothing but disaster.
Even though Bailey could neutralize hundreds of poisons, Soul Reaper was one that was too difficult even for her.
If anyone close to her were poisoned by it, she could only helplessly watch them die.
“Let me think about it. If that's the only way of saving Vero, we'll have no choice but to get them involved.”
