Chapter 700
Chapter 700
After taking a step forward, Zeke narrowed his eyes and stared at Philip. “What a coincidence, Mr. Hoffman. Why are you here at Inferno Hall's den in the middle of the night? Could it be that you're the one who caused this unsightly situation we're looking at?”
Before Philip could explain himself, a few bodyguards dressed in black suits barged into the room. “The person has been rescued, Mr. Hoffman.”
The person has been rescued?
Bailey and Artemis exchanged a glance before looking toward the flight of stairs in unison.
Their gazes fell on one of the black-clothed bodyguards. Actually—to be more precise—they were looking at Steven, who was being carried on the bodyguard's shoulder.
Upon noticing that scene, Zeke shot Philip a stern glare as he asked in a deep voice, “Care to explain why my father is with your subordinate, Mr. Hoffman? Are you the one who is colluding with Sofie?”
“No, no, no.” Philip waved his hands and responded frantically, “I just arrived here two days ago. There's no way I can get involved in the disputes between Hallsbay's forces. Please don't accuse me, Mr. Shurmer. I'm here to rescue people as well. See? I saved your father, didn't I?”
A mocking smile manifested on Zeke's face. He raised his brows slightly and asked, “Oh? Is that so? You're here to save my father, huh? In my opinion, I think you're just exposing yourself.”
Seeing that, Bailey walked forward from Zeke's back and pulled his arm silently before looking at Philip opposite her. “Zeke, since Mr. Hoffman told us he's here to save Father, let's hear him out. If he has aContentt bel0ngs to N0ve/lDrâ/ma.O(r)g!
reasonable explanation, won't you be falsely accusing him of exposing himself?”
Zeke scoffed coldly and turned his head away slightly.
With a polite smile, Bailey told Philip, “Mr. Hoffman, since I'm Julie's mentor, I believe you and I are considered old acquaintances with the friendship we have. Since we're old friends, I won't beat around the bush with you. Let's get straight to the point. How did you find out that my father is at Inferno Hall?”
Having heard that question, Philip nodded and answered, “During this year, Juliana has always been staying at Hallsbay. So, the Hoffman family has stationed many spies here. They are the ones who found out that Old Mr. Shurmer was imprisoned at Inferno Hall.”
He added, “I'm sure you all know that as soon as I arrived at Hallsbay a few days ago, I've been wanting to invite Mr. Shurmer out and apologize to him in person. However, he's been avoiding me. So, I've been wondering if it's because of Juliana's miscarriage that led Mr. Shurmer to resent the Hoffman family, thinking that I failed to protect her. Since the tragedy has already happened, all I can do now is to make up for it.
At that, Philip shifted his attention to Steven, who was being carried by Philip's bodyguard.
He then continued, “An hour ago, the spies reported to us secretly, telling us that Old Mr. Shurmer is at Inferno Hall and that they wanted to kill him. Upon receiving the information, I immediately came here to rescue him. Luckily, my subordinates were able to save him.”
Right then, Philip bowed at Zeke and added a final statement, “Mr. Shurmer, Julie's accidental miscarriage is caused by the Hoffman family not serving her well enough. Since I've rescued your
father, I hope we can patch things up.”
Having heard what Philip said at last, Zeke subconsciously wanted to retort.
Does this man think I'm a fool? His lies are full of loopholes, and there are many unjustifiable instances. Does he really think he can hoodwink me?
“Do you really think I'm—”
Before he could finish speaking, Bailey pulled his arm again, signaling him not to say anything.
After Zeke swallowed the words on the tip of his tongue, Bailey finally turned to Philip beamingly. “Mr. Hoffman, Julie called me and told me it's an accidental miscarriage. This is not your fault. My brother simply didn't contact you because he was busy these days. It meant nothing else. Now that you've rescued my father, you are our savior. We owe you a favor.”
“As expected from a knowledgeable big shot like you, Ms. Jefferson. You're so generous. With your reassurance, I can finally stop worrying.”
With that, Philip turned around and shouted at his bodyguards, “Why are you still standing there? Hurry and hand Old Mr. Shurmer to Mr. Shurmer and Ms. Jefferson!”
“Yes,” replied the bodyguards.
As soon as Steven was in her subordinates' hands, Bailey expressed her gratitude toward Philip graciously. “Thank you for saving his life. My brother and I will pay you a visit in the future. Please take care of my mentee in the Hoffman family as well. I'm eternally grateful to you.”
“No problem,” Philip responded.
In the car, Zeke asked with a frown on his face, “Do you believe that old geezer's nonsense?”
Bailey couldn't help but sneer. “I won't believe a single word uttered by anyone from the Hoffman family.”
“Then—”
Grinningly, Bailey interrupted him and spoke while enunciating every word. “Zeke, we don't have any evidence to prove that Philip is colluding with Sofie and dragged Inferno Hall into this mess in the end. That's because everyone who knows about this was killed. If you have a falling out with him right now, he might resort to extreme methods. Even if he isn't afraid of death, we are afraid of Julie's death. Are you going to risk Julie's life like this?”
“What should we do now?” Zeke inquired while gritting his teeth furiously.
Bailey glanced at Artemis, only to see him staring at her smilingly. With his support, Bailey gained even more confidence. “Keep delaying Philip, and don't let him leave Hallsbay. We can't let him escape before Edmund's leg injury gets better. Also, find out the relationship between Sofie and him.”
She continued, “I can't rest assured as long as that woman is alive. If we could find Sofie through Philip, then we shall thank him for toying with us tonight as if we're buffoons. He could've hidden his relationship with Sofie quietly if he didn't play that trick on us. Yet, that gimmick of his will most likely expose him.”
“All right, then. We'll listen to your suggestion. Now, I hope Philip and Sofie have some sort of relationship. Then, we can find Sofie through him,” replied Zeke.
Meanwhile, in the guest room at the medical base, Sebastian and Zayron were sprawling on the bed.
“Seb, your birth father is quite assertive. He's not inferior to your stepfather at all. You're so lucky,” said Zayron.
Glaring at Zayron, Sebastian sighed and replied, “It's pointless to be assertive if he can't even handle my mother. Forget the fact that he's the person in charge of Tarragon. He just faces my mother with his tail between his legs. I can't bring myself to admire such a coward.”
Hearing that, Zayron laughed out loud. “It's quite easy for him to handle your mother, though. Let me teach you some ways.”
“Drug her? Have sex with her? Find a love rival to trigger her? What else can you think of other than these stupid ideas?” Sebastian snorted.
Zayron flipped over and got out of bed, then leaned against the cupboard nonchalantly. Although the eight-year-old boy still had a childish look on his face, he was already exhibiting his talents.
No one would be capable of constraining him ten years later.
“I've grown lately and won't use those cheap tricks anymore. We'll use some new strategies.”
