Chapter 691
Chapter 691
Justin guffawed as if he had heard one of the world's most excellent jokes. Even though he was laughing heartily, a frosty glint flashed across his eyes.
Olivia narrowed her eyes at him as she spoke in a low voice. “Why are you laughing? Lettie is currently pregnant with your child. The Xuereb family will suffer if you don't take responsibility. Your father and I went through so much to bring you up. Can you bear to see us endure a torturous end because we offended the Fletcher family? You're a highly-educated man, so do you want to be known as an unfilial son?”
Justin shook his head. A bizarre smile appeared on his face. “So you guys just want me to marry her. All right. We will wait until her stomach gets bigger before we decide. We shall see what happens then.”
Joy flashed across Olivia and Scarlett's faces.
Did he agree to the suggestion? Oh my. He did!
Olivia probed further, “Are you serious about marrying Lettie?”
The eeriness in Justin's eyes deepened as he stared at Scarlett's flat stomach with a smile. Even though he didn't know what it was like to fall into hell from heaven, he could let Scarlett taste that feeling.
Exposing the secret about the pregnancy now is no fun. I will deal a fatal blow to this woman after she thinks her manipulation and scheme have worked out. Only the most extraordinary cruelty can teach them a lesson after they have been so brutal toward Veronique.
“As I said, we should wait until her baby gets bigger before we make a move. Veronique is not feeling well, so I can't abandon her now. If I did, the public would criticize me for being cruel and heartless.”
Olivia nodded. “Yes. Yes. You're right. That woman is still alive. We shouldn't be too hasty. Let's discuss this after she is dead, which I think will happen in one or two months. Lettie's stomach will be bigger by then, and it's the perfect time for you to marry her.”
Rage flickered in Justin's eyes. Inside his pocket, he clenched his fist tighter. The man felt that he would unleash his fury if he stayed a bit longer, so Justin decided to take his leave.
“Is that all? If so, I'll head back to the medical base now. I need to treat a few wounded patients over there.” With that, Justin turned and left.
Olivia's voice rang from behind then. “You only come back once in a while. Why don't you stay around to dine with Lettie before leaving again? She needs your comfort and company because she's pregnant. Why can't you consider her feelings? All text © NôvelD(r)a'ma.Org.
Justin sneered. Not halting his footsteps, he said, “I didn't say I'll forgive her. I only agreed to make plans after her baby gets bigger because our family can't square up against the Fletcher family, so I have no choice but to give in.”
Olivia watched Justin leave before whirling around to peer at Scarlett. When she noticed the fading smile on the latter's face, Olivia reached out hurriedly to grab Scarlett's wrist. “Lettie, a relationship can be built. You have many years ahead of you with Justin. Since he has kept an open mind, just wait for him to come around.”
Scarlett pursed her lips, shaking her head. “There's something amiss regarding this. I know it. But I can't tell what is wrong. It's unusual for him to agree so readily!”
Olivia chuckled lightly. “You're still young, and it's okay if you don't understand how a man's mind works. He doesn't have a deep bond with Veronique, so even though Justin said he would die alongside her, he must have been reluctant to carry out this act. Besides, Justin had to rethink his decision when I used the Xuereb family's future to threaten him. Don't worry, Lettie. He agreed to marry you because, for one, he doesn't want to die for Veronique, and secondly, he is fulfilling his duty as a son.”
Scarlett flashed Olivia a forced smile. She had a feeling that something was off.
Ultimately, Scarlett used a despicable way to get pregnant. Not only did Justin agree to let her carry the baby, but he also promised to marry her. No matter what the reason was, Scarlett found his reaction strange. However, she couldn't figure out what caused that niggling worry in the back of her mind.
“Okay. Let's hope you're right, Mrs. Xuereb. I bet everything I have on this baby. I might lose it all if things go awry in the end. I'll give you a heads-up. If I have a hard time, I'll make sure the Xuereb family suffers with me too.”
Olivia replied with a nervous smile, “No. That won't happen. If he doesn't want to marry you, Mr. Xuereb and I will threaten his obedience with our lives. He will never be coldhearted enough to be unbothered. Moreover, why were you worried when he agreed to marry you? Listen to my advice. All you have to do now is take good care of your baby.”
Meanwhile, Shannon and Micah walked side-by-side with each other in the dark tunnel at the prison in
Tarragon.
There was a pungent scent of blood in the air that was mixed with the faint stench of decay.
Micah noticed Shannon's uneasiness. He spoke hesitantly. “Why don't you wait outside? I'll get someone to bring Yvette out, and you can talk to her there.”
Shannon didn't respond. After a few steps forward, she replied, “I stayed in the same environment for quite some time six years ago, and I had to endure cruel punishment every day that made me feel like dying. Do you know what went through my mind when Eugene died?”
Pain and despair flashed across Micah's eyes.
I'll never recover from the trauma and pain of losing that child. Oof, that sorrow of not knowing that my child existed.
Micah knew Shannon was pregnant when she was held captive, and his child had grown inside her stomach while the mother was being tortured.
Shannon felt Micah's breath quicken as his footsteps got heavier. She smiled with a hint of mockery. “When he died, I thought to myself. Why didn't I get rid of him when I was tortured in prison? Why did I let him arrive in the world and suffer through all those pain before letting him die?”
In the narrow space, Shannon exploded with hatred. A malicious intent appeared in her eyes as the desire for revenge overwhelmed her.
“You only saw those photos at the accident scene, right? You didn't see what he looked like in close
proximity. Well, let me tell you. It was horrifying. His skull was smashed in with white brain matter flowing out of it. Even though Bailey knew she couldn't save Eugene's life, she tried her best. Because of this, she paid a hefty price, not daring to handle an operation for many years. The tragic sight of Eugene's crushed skull and his untimely death clouded Bailey's every thought. She couldn't forget the soul-piercing pain, not even until the day she dies.”
Micah's pace slowly came to a stop. He leaned his body against the wall, lowering his head without speaking.
If one were to observe carefully, one would notice his body was trembling violently. He didn't rely on the wall's support because he wanted to look cool. Instead, Micah was using it to ensure he didn't crumble to the ground.
Shannon's words were like daggers stabbing through Micah's heart when he thought about how he had never met his child.
“What... are you trying to say?” Micah questioned.
