Serve No One This Life

Chapter 196

Chapter 196 Women Are Unfathomable

Christopher sneered coldly, glaring at the service staff. "There's plenty of credit on this card. How could it possibly not work? Is your machine broken?"

The staff couldn't afford to offend Christopher, but indeed, no money was coming through the transaction. Moreover, the machine was confirmed to be working fine, as it had just been used. Was it just bad luck?

"Mr. Sanders, please don't be angry. Let me try another machine right away. Please wait a moment," the staff said apologetically. They tried all the machines in the store, but none worked. Could it be that none of them worked? Finally, the staff reluctantly returned the card, apologizing, "I'm sorry, Mr. Sanders, your card indeed cannot complete the transaction. Would you like to try another card?"

As Christopher watched the staff try all the machines, his expression shifted from anger to pale. Could there really be a problem with the card? he wondered, then took out his wallet and threw out a few more cards. "Try these."

Once again, the staff's attempts were fruitless. Trembling, they shook their head. "Mr. Sanders, I'm sorry, none of these cards work. Based on experience, they might have been frozen. Perhaps you should check with the bank to see if there's been a mistake in their operations, leading to the freezing of your cards."

"What?" Christopher's face turned ugly instantly as he glared darkly at the cards. How could these perfectly fine cards have problems?!

Already annoyed earlier that day, his mood worsened. He turned around awkwardly, only to find the staff staring at him intently, seemingly sensing his embarrassment. Grinding his teeth, Christopher took out his own card and threw it out. "Use this one!" It was his little treasury, with tens of thousands inside.

"Mr. Sanders, there isn't enough balance on this one," the staff said cautiously.

Christopher's face burned with panic, frustration, and shame. How could there not be enough? He distinctly remembered having money. "How much can you swipe?"

The staff replied nervously, "Only three thousand."

Three thousand?!

The staff grew even more nervous, watching him anxiously.

Just then, a gentle voice came from behind, "After all this time, you're still so careless, going out without bringing any money. Aren't you afraid of being laughed at?" Then, the woman handed out a card, indicating that the staff should swipe it.

Not daring to delay, the staff immediately took the card. After successfully completing the transaction, the staff breathed a sigh of relief and handed out the card, saying, "All done, Miss Hayes, please take your card."

Christopher turned to look at Cassandra, awkwardly biting his lip. "I'll pay you back another day, Cassandra."

"No rush." Cassandra smiled brightly. "Is your arm alright?" Her gaze fell on Christopher's reddened arm. Christopher hurriedly let down his rolled-up sleeve, shaking his head with an unpleasant expression. "I'm fine." Cassandra didn't push further, smiling casually. "That's good."

After leaving the clothing store, Christopher hurriedly got into his car, started the engine, and drove toward the company. He called the bank, demanding to know why his card was frozen.

"Mr. Sanders, hello. We're just following regulations. Orders from above instructed us to freeze these cards. All affiliated cards under your name have been frozen and cannot be used." Christopher hung up the phone in frustration. All frozen? What does that mean?

But it seemed that the more he tried to rush back to the office, the more the heavens went against his wishes. The traffic on the road increased, causing heavy congestion. Christopher sat in the car, feeling more and more impatient. He honked the horn angrily at the obstacles ahead, gritting his teeth and cursing, "F*cking road! Why is it so congested?"

Christopher saw a path cleared in front and immediately stepped on the accelerator to dash forward. But just as he had driven a few dozen yards, he heard the piercing sound of a horn from the side. He turned his head and saw a car out of control rushing toward him. Before he could react, the car violently collided with his. The car shook violently from the impact, dizziness engulfing his senses. In the next moment, his consciousness slowly faded away.

Inside the CEO's office, after finishing their meal, Angela went to take the lunchbox, but Jonathan intercepted, "Don't worry about it. Someone will clear the table." Angela blinked and didn't refuse.

"Are you going to the hospital this afternoon?" Jonathan asked.

Angela shook her head. "No, it's the weekend today. We have a day off. The teacher said we don't need to go to the hospital."

Jonathan's gaze fell on her face as he calmly spoke, "In that case, stay and keep me company while I work, hmm?" Then his eyes glanced past her toward the door.

"But... Apologies for intruding then!" Angela immediately caught on and changed her mind. "If I stay the whole afternoon, the whole office will know the CEO's wife has come to inspect, right?"

Jonathan lowered his head, lips curling into a faint smile. Then he pointed to the door behind him. "I have a lounge at the back. You can rest inside if you want to."

"Okay," Angela readily agreed.

Suddenly, there was a rhythmic knock on the office door. Jonathan's voice sounded sternly, "Come in."

It was Simon. After entering, he walked up to Jonathan, bending down to report, "Sir, Mr. Christopher had an accident."

Angela blinked in disbelief and stepped forward, "Who did you say had an accident?"

"Christopher."

He had an accident?!

Jonathan raised his eyes indifferently and asked, "What happened?"

"The records showed that Mr. Christopher tried to overtake and ran a red light, colliding with a truck going straight," Simon truthfully reported. "He was found promptly and has been taken to the hospital. He's currently undergoing surgery."

A bit of a drama queen, Angela propped her chin and feigned regret as she commented, "Reckless driving is a one-way ticket to disaster; how dare he run the red lights? Even dogs know better!"

Why does it look like Mrs. Lawson is quite happy that Mr. Christopher got into a car crash? Simon mused. Alas, Women are like the ocean-beautiful but unpredictable and mysterious.

"Have they been notified?" Jonathan asked.

Simon quickly understood who Jonathan was referring to. He nodded, "Mr. Sanders has already gone over, and Teresa is there too."

"Hmm." Jonathan's voice was light but full of authority, giving off immense intimidation. "Which hospital?"

"The hospital where Mrs. Lawson is training."

Jonathan rose slowly, gently squeezing Angela's shoulder. "Looks like we won't be able to work this afternoon. Want to come with me to the hospital?" Angela nodded understandingly. "Sure, let's see if Christopher survived."

Jonathan chuckled. "You're pretty concerned about him."

"Well, of course. As his sister-in-law, I should care about my little brother-in-law's well-being so my sister doesn't end up a widow," Angela said cheerfully.Original from NôvelDrama.Org.

In the long, solemn corridors of the hospital, silence prevailed. Jonathan strode heavily, leaving the echoes of his footsteps resonating in the depths of the corridor. When he reached the operating room at the end of the hallway, Michael and Teresa were already waiting outside. Michael paced anxiously, waiting for news from the operating room, while Teresa had tears in her eyes, her clasped hands praying for Christopher's safety.
