Chapter 1151 The Complexity of Human Hearts
Lucia tugged at the corner of her lips, speaking in a cold tone. “Mr. Wood, you’re too confident. I’m just curious about what you and Nia, Kevin were talking about earlier.”
Casper raised an eyebrow and glanced back at where they had been standing before answering with a smile. “So you have been keeping an eye on me all this time?”
Lucia couldn’t stand Casper’s arrogant tone and his supposed sense of humor that was nothing but repulsive. “Casper, speak plainly! You can fight with Nia all you want, but don’t use my name to do it.”
Several acquaintances had already come over to talk about it. Casper was using her and Arthur’s name to stir up public opinion, saying that he, Lucia and Arthur were on the same side while Nia and Kevin were naturally abandoned by them. Lucia had anticipated such comments appearing but still got angry.NôvelDrama.Org holds text © rights.
“Ms. Webb,” Casper wasn’t ashamed in the slightest as he spoke, “aren’t we partners? Even if I didn’t say anything, others would know.”
“In recent times StandHill has been fighting with Fabulous Dav’s due to personal grudges causing frequent market disruptions,” Lucia composed herself before continuing calmly, “The last time the union stepped in for mandatory rectification was during Modern Myles’ conflict with Conrad’s twenty years ago. Their fate is self-evident now so don’t follow in their footsteps.”
“Thank you for reminding me, Ms. Webb,” Casper smiled again, “But Nia is truly despicable. I couldn’t bear watching her any longer so I wanted to punish her a little bit. It’s just that you can remain calm even after being framed countless times by Nia. If it were me, then I would have taken action long ago.”
“When entering society everyone will have desires for fame or profit. Nia only took a little bit after all without harming anyone’s life… but some people…” Lucia stopped herself mid-sentence realizing she made her implications too obvious.
Casper who usually talked smoothly around Lucia fell silent upon hearing her words while staring straight at her. Who did she mean by “some people”?
Lucia didn’t avoid his gaze either as she even felt an impulse rising within herself. What if he knew?!
As both of them stared silently at each other, trying to decipher each other’s thoughts, Arthur suddenly appeared from the side. He reached out his hand towards Lucia, pulling her into his embrace and asking softly, “How come every time I leave for just a moment you get yourself into trouble again?”
Casper sensed that Arthur had picked up on his insinuation about being a nuisance, but he didn’t react. “Mr. Davies, sorry to interrupt, but I noticed Ms. Webb was here all alone and thought I’d come over and keep her company,” Casper said.
Arthur didn’t even look at Casper as he continued to scold Lucia in a reproachful tone of voice, “Don’t talk to strangers or anyone who’s not relevant. Just wait for me to come back.”
Casper’s lips twitched slightly. He hadn’t known that Arthur also enjoyed engaging in verbal sparring. “Mr. Davies, since you’re back, I’ll take my leave then,” he said and turned to depart.
It wasn’t until then that Arthur turned his head slightly and glanced at Casper indifferently before saying, “You can fight with Nia all you want, but don’t drag Lucia into it or cause any trouble on my turf. Otherwise, I won’t sit idly by.”
“Ms. Webb already reminded me just now,” replied Casper in an obedient tone while smiling slyly, “I’ll be mindful of the boundaries from now on. However, when it comes to Nia… I can’t guarantee anything.”
Arthur withdrew his gaze and ignored Casper from then on while the latter left this corner where there was no room for him.
“How are you feeling?” asked Arthur as he stroked Lucia’s cheek after seeing off their uninvited guest.
“I’m okay,” replied Lucia with a forced smile before whispering softly, “Maybe I’m just too stubborn.”
It turned out that Lucia had requested a momentary separation from Arthur. She just wanted to see if she could hide her true feelings, but now it seemed…
However, she hadn’t fully revealed herself in front of Arthur.
“You, you…” Arthur sometimes didn’t know what to do with Lucia. He embraced her and helplessly said, “Sometimes I wish you could be a little more vulnerable, not so strong-willed, and just rely on me wholeheartedly.”
“If I were really like that, would I catch your eye?” Lucia smiled and asked.
Arthur gave a shallow smile and sealed the answer on Lucia’s lips.
The evening’s banquet concluded smoothly. Following Arthur’s reminder, and with Casper having confronted Nia, the three of them didn’t cause any further trouble, much to the disappointment of many onlookers.
Nia and Kevin subsequently recruited more bodyguards, wanting to be protected twenty-four hours a day. Kevin had a feeling that Casper might make a move, so they remained cautious. He understood the importance of being careful.
Three days later, Casper received the investigation results from Tommy.
“Mr. Wood, I found out some things, but…” Tommy hesitated in front of the desk, unsure if he should continue speaking.
“Speak the truth. There’s no need to hold back,” Casper said in a low voice.
“I found out…” Tommy took a deep breath before revealing his investigation results one by one. “Leon is indeed using his power for personal gain. He has been diverting funds from small projects into his own account, and now he has millions of dollars saved up. I don’t know what he plans to do with all that money…”
After finishing, Tommy cautiously looked at Casper’s reaction. Although Casper appeared calm and collected on the surface, his fingers were already tapping on the table in anger.
“Leon is quite clever to have found loopholes in company management so quickly,” Casper said coldly. To him, millions of dollars were nothing special, but being able to constantly profit from small projects without getting caught meant that Leon had been doing this for some time.
“Mr. Wood, Leon was just being foolish for a moment,” Tommy pleaded when he sensed something was off with Casper’s tone. “Besides, he is loyal to you even if he did take some money…”
“You are also loyal to me,” interrupted Casper before Tommy could finish speaking. “Would you ever take this kind of money?”
“Of course not!” replied Tommy immediately as someone who spoke their mind honestly would do so without hesitation. “Whatever you give me, I will use it accordingly and never be greedy.”
At this point, Tommy realized something was wrong as he looked at the now angry expression on Casper’s face which moments ago had been calm and collected.
“People have hidden agendas…” muttered Caspar sarcastically while wearing a bitter smile on his face as if mocking himself or others’ intentions behind their words or actions.
