Chapter 0040

His warm breath tickled Candice’s neck as he spoke, and she tilted her head to the side in response.

However, his hand firmly gripped Candice’s wrist, trapping her in his arms. She experienced a cold

sensation on her neck as his kisses

trailed up to her ear.

Candice’s ears were particularly sensitive. Almost immediately, it caused her body to become limp,

His gaze grew intense as he held her waist, pulling her onto the sofa.

Their eight–year familiarity meant he understood her body well and could quickly make her aroused.

Raindrops pelted the open window in the living room, causing the curtain to flutter and sway

The cold wind on her exposed skin snapped Candice back to reality.

Gritting her teeth, she gathered her strength and shoved Alex away.

They were on the sofa, so Alex was pushed to the other side.

His hair was unkempt. His shirt’s buttons had come undone, exposing his chest and abs.

ng over her shoulders. She took a moment to pull

The slip dress that Candice was wearing had been pulled down and was now loosely hung

up her straps.

Regaining her composure, she demanded. “Look at me. I am not Sonia.”

Alex’s face clouded over, but before he could respond, his phone rang. It was Sonia.

He hesitated, then answered the call

Sonia’s upset voice came through, questioning. “Lex, didn’t you promise to be with me tonight? Why

aren’t you here yet?”

Alex pinched the bridge of his nose, replying. “I’m on my way.”

He hung up the phone.

Candice was still sitting on the sofa. Her slip dress had been severely ripped, exposing her entire back.

Her thin frame gave the impression that her shoulder blades were butterfly wings that could flap and fly.

Her pale complexion accentuated her delicate appearance.

Alex had promised Sonia; therefore, he got up to leave.

He had only taken a step when he turned back to Candice, saying indifferently, “Of course you are not

Sonia.”

Candice lingered in the living room before returning to her room.

Her wrist had turned red and was hurting from where Alex had pulled her. But Alex could not see any of

this, whose only intent seemed to be exploiting his drunkenness for intimacy with her.

Candice spoke with a client in the morning before heading to the office the next day.

Kayla greeted her and said cryptically. “It’s quite lively upstairs.”

Candice asked, “What happened?”

“Word is. Mr. Elysian’s mother has arrived and is being tough on Sonia, Kayla remarked, sighing. “But

it’s predictable, isn’t it? How frequently do girls from the slums marry into money?”

Candice paid no attention to anything else she said. She was surprised Helen would show up at the

workplace: she normally avoided becoming involved in such situations.

Before Candice could give this any more thought, she received a call from upstairs requesting that she

come up.

Upon Candice’s arrival, she found Helen seated in the reception area with Sonia standing before her.

Evidently. Sonia’s eyes were red from

crying.

There was no sign of Alex.

Helen had caught sight of Candice as she stood at the door, lost in thought. Her treatment of Candice

was consistently poor. She asked, ”

Where’s Alex?

“I don’t know,” Candice said.

“Aren’t you his secretary?”

“I’m no longer working in the president’s office,” Candice said quietly.

Seeing the coffee in front of Helen, Candice approached with a slight frown, suggesting. “Allow me to

replace this coffee with some black tea for you.”

Helen was never a coffee drinker.

The woman hamrumphed and said, “People from lowly backgrounds just aren’t presentable.”

It was unclear whether her comment targeted Candice or Sonia.

Accustomed to such scom, Candice calmly replaced the coffee with tea, maintaining a neutral

expression.

Sonia, already teary–eyed, seemed even more distressed; her lips were pursed, exuding a sense of

vulnerability.

Helen, evidently in a foul mood, tasted the tea and then set the cup down, her voice dripping with

sarcasm, “Alex’s tastes are consistently

disappointing.”

Candice did not linger, knowing it wasn’t her place to intervene with Helen, both emotionally and

logically.

As she made her way downstairs, she overheard some whispering..

“Being a rich man’s daughter–in–law is tough. Did you see how Sonia was belittled by Mr. Elysian’s

mother?”

Helen’s standards were high, and Candice had never been able to impress her over the years.

She was curious as to Alex’s level of indulgence toward Sonia.

After Helen’s departure, Alex arrived. Office staff returning from upstairs began to gossip,

They claimed Sonia had broken down in tears upon seeing Alex, voicing her grievances.

Candice, focusing on her work, did not pay attention to what they were saying, nor did she join the

discussion.

Instead, Kayla craned her neck and asked, “What was Mr. Elysian’s reaction?”

“What else but to immediately console her?”

Candice, pausing her typing, reflected that Alex was indeed protective of Sonia.

Helen’s remarks to Sonia today, though softer than her initial encounter with Candice, still deeply

affected Alex.

Candice was surprised to see Jackson at Aether Corporation, ready to pick her up after work. She

greeted him with a wave.

“What brings you here?” she inquired as she neared him.

Jackson playfully responded, “Can’t I see you without a purpose?”

After laughing at his own comment, he presented a small box and said, “I forgot this last time. It pairs

with the one I gave earlier, I thought it seemed lonely alone at home, so I brought its mate. Lovers must

end up together.”

The little figure in this box was holding a blue heart, as opposed to the pink one Jackson had given her

previously. They were, indeed, at couple.

Curiously, Candice asked if he was into ceramics. Content bel0ngs to Nôvel(D)r/a/ma.Org.

Jackson shared, “My grandfather was; I picked it up from him as a kid.”

Concluding, he suggested. “There’s a ceramic exhibit tonight. Care to join me?”

Candice was going to agree because she had nothing planned for the evening. Then, she noticed Alex

and Sonia exiting the building.

Sonia, with red eyes, clung to Alex like a distressed kitten.

Candice averted her sight. After thinking her coworkers were being overdramatic in the afternoon, she

discovered they were actually understating the gravity of the situation.

Jackson would always greet Alex upon seeing him, but Alex, who only gave him a passing glance,

rarely returned the greeting.

Candice, under his gaze, remained indifferent.

In contrast, Sonia, who was holding Alex’s hand, tightened her grip and said. “Let’s go, Lex; it’s getting

late.”

Alex acknowledged with a hum and headed to his car.

Candice averted her look and inquired, “Aren’t we going to the exhibition? It’s getting late.”

Jackson was taken aback. Then he opened the car door for her and said with a smile, “I

thought you wouldn’t be interested.”

“How could that be?” Candice paused before she answered, “The ceramics you make are lovely, I like

them a lot.”
