Chapter 4 Fake Friends
Chapter 4 Fake Friends
Emma left the faucet running while she looked at herself in the mirror. Her eyes were red and puffy
from crying.
She splashed some water on her face to wash off the tear streaks. Her scrubs looked good on her, it
made her feel dignified. She was doing good things, she was saving lives. She's not worthless…
If it wasn't for that incident 7 years ago, William Montgomery would be her husband.
Emma Lang felt the familiar sense of panic arise in her body whenever she thought back to that
incident. Her hands trembled as she squeezed her eyes shut.
Stop thinking about it Emma. Just stop.
The images of that night flashed across her mind. That night in the rain, a group of men surrounded her
in a dark alleyway…
She screamed for help for what seemed like hours, but in the end, the rain drowned out her voice.
The sound of knocking suddenly pulled Emma back from her tormented thoughts. Emma felt relieved
something had pulled her from her dark thoughts, she didn't want to go down that rabbit hole again.
She took a deep breath and snapped back to her senses.
"Who is inside? Why do you lock the door?”
She hurriedly washed her hands and opened the door.
“What’s wrong with you? It’s a public restroom, not yours!" A patient's mother looked at her with a
frowning expression.
Emma lowered her head and quickly walked away.
As soon as she returned to her desk, she saw the last person she wanted to see.
"Emma." Jennifer West stood up and the white gown dragged on the floor. The sunlight outside the
window shone on it, making it look very dazzling.
She saw Emma's puffy eyes and hesitated. "Are you alright?"
"I’m fine. Some hand sanitizer got into my eyes, that's all." Emma pretended to be relaxed and put the
medical record on the table, then looked at up Jennifer, "did you need anything?" Content provided by NôvelDrama.Org.
"Here's the thing. William wants to change to another doctor. I figured I should tell you at least." She
added, "It's what he requested, in case you think I had something to do with it."
Emma saw this coming, she wasn't surprised at all. "It doesn't matter. Just tell the dean about this. You
don't need to explain anything to me."
Jennifer knew everything about their past together, she was her best friend once upon a time after all.
"Emma, I know you must be in pain. You must also blame me. If you didn't leave…" Jennifer West
stopped and pulled Emma Lang's hand with a sad expression. "We fell in love after you left, and you
left for so many years Emma..."
For some reason, Jennifer's pitiful expression made Emma feel a little nauseous.
Emma has always been a straightforward person, she thought Jennifer was the same way. Clearly she
was wrong. When did Jennifer become so fake? Or maybe she's always been this way…
Still, Emma explained patiently, "It's all behind us now. If you are worried for whatever reason, don't be.
I didn't come back to Rock City for William."
Jennifer opened her mouth to speak again, but Emma's phone rang just in time.
Emma pulled her hand out casually and glanced at the caller ID. "Jennifer, sorry, but I have to take this
call."
Jennifer smiled shyly. "Since you're busy, let's catch up another day."
When Jennifer turned around to close the door, she paused when she heard a voice from within the
office.
Emma Lang accidentally touched the speaker, and the soft and tender voice on the other end of the
line could be heard clearly.
"Mommy! Guess who this is?”
Mommy? Jennifer's mouth dropped open as her hands tightened on the door handle.
