Chapter 89 If Everyone Wanted to Win, Who Was Going to Lose?
Only when Alicia and Edmond left the hospital with Melissa did they learn that Lori and Diane had gotten into conflict, and thus, the falling from the building occurred.
Now both were in the emergency room, but the one in charge of Diane was just a trainee...
Getting into the taxi, Alicia sat in the back seat, hugging the unconscious Melissa.
Edmond was on the phone in the passenger seat, and perhaps he had known someone in the higher-up of another hospital. He managed to arrange everything quickly, and now the hospital awaited Melissa's arrival.
Alicia had not spoken a single word.
She seemed to be in a daze.
Edmond thought for a long while before squeezing out a word of comfort.
"Don't worry. I'll do what I can." Edmond reassured Alicia.
Alicia was silent for a long time before she slowly spoke up.
"I feel so tired," Alicia said.
There was a hint of sarcasm and sadness in her voice.
Edmond did not utter a word.
The driver dared not even breathe and silently prayed that the unconscious elderly lady behind him would not pass away in his car. Otherwise, that would be very unlucky.
Alicia choked back a sob before continuing.
"I'm a very competitive person and have always enjoyed to compete with others since I was young. I don't want to lose, so I've managed to win everything but nothing I have winned... Just now, I suddenly feel so ridiculous, like I'm a fool."
There were many people like this in the world.
They thought of life as an arena and every day was a competition.
In school, they competed with their grades. In love, they competed over who would give in first, while love rivals competed over who was more attractive to capture their man's eye. In society, they competed for who would earn more.
Even in hospital operating theaters, they had to compete for it...
If everyone wanted to win, who was going to lose?
So what if one were to win?
At that moment, Alicia felt so exhausted that she did not want to compete anymore. She just wanted her mother to survive and the people she cared for to be well.
That was all.

Edmond was very efficient.
He usually seemed so cynical, but he was always the most reliable when things really happened.
The taxi dropped them off at the neighboring hospital, and the hospital personnel that Edmond had contacted earlier were already there to pick up Melissa and take her to the emergency room.
The whole process was smooth and professional.
Alicia seldom felt so helpless, but at this point, she could not do anything except sign some documents at the registration counter.
Edmond and a few doctors discussed Melissa's situation. He passed them various medical reports, and all the terminology they were discussing was something that Alicia could not understand.
When she came to her senses, the operating room lights were already lit, and Edmond had pulled her to sit and wait on a bench. Property © of NôvelDrama.Org.
"I don't work here, so they won't let me do the surgery." Edmond apologized.
Alicia tightly grabbed Edmond's hand and replied, "It's fine. You've already done a lot for me."
"Calm yourself down. Don't get too worked up." Edmond comforted her.
She nodded in agreement, but she could not fool anymore with her pale face and trembling hands.
Edmond could only hold Alicia tightly in his arms to make her feel warm and secure as much as possible.
His hands were patting her back slowly like coaxing a little child.
Soon, Alicia calmed down.
Edmond's phone kept ringing, but he waited until Alicia was more emotionally stabilized before taking it out to read the message, and his expression darkened.
It was easy to guess that his Dean had demanded Edmond to go back and help out again.
Alicia's eyes flickered as she told Edmond, "Since my mom is already undergoing surgery, you shouldn't wait here with me. Your hospital might need your help badly, so you should go back and take a look. After all, you're a doctor too."
It was not that Alicia was overly sympathetic to others.
It was just that once she had calmed down, she placed herself in the shoe of a healer and understood that saving lives and helping people was a duty and vocation for all doctors and nurses.
Edmond had put aside his duties for her mother, and even with how the circumstances forced him to make such choices, this incident today would most likely affect his career greatly.
If the Dean decided to hold Edmond responsible, he would probably charge Edmond with offenses such as having no medical ethics or disregarding his patients' life.
Alicia knew that becoming a doctor was Edmond's dream since his childhood.
She could not let him ruin his future because of her.
With such consideration, she persuaded Edmond to return to work.
After saying those words, Edmond looked at Alicia in surprise before returning to his usual demeanor.
Alicia nodded at him and explained, "It's fine. I can wait here alone. Instead of waiting here with me, you might as well go and do something more meaningful. Don't lose your job because of this, so go now."
Edmond saw the seriousness in her eyes and understood her determination.
His heart could not help but ache for her.
Even then, Alicia was still thinking about his career for him.
"What a silly girl." Edmond thought silently.
He got up quietly after letting out a sigh.
Alicia watched as Edmond slowly walked away and left.
His broad shoulders always gave her a great sense of security, and whenever she watched the back slowly move away into the distance, the feeling of uneasiness and unsettling increased.
She knew that she could not be so selfish.
Plus, she could not let Edmond sacrifice so much for her.
Until Edmond's back had disappeared from her sight, Alicia finally withdrew her gaze, lowered her head, and murmured in a low voice.
"I can do it... even if I'm alone."
She kept on chanting to calm herself down that she could do it.
However, suddenly the sound of the footsteps drew nearer, and stopped beside her before sitting down.
Alicia looked up and saw Edmond holding two portions of bread and bottles of water while telling her calmly, "Eat some food to fill your stomach first."
She was utterly surprised.
"Aren't you going back to the hospital?" Alicia asked in astonishment.
Edmond stared into her eyes for a while before bursting into laughter and explaining it to her.
"Licia, you're the one who needs me the most right now."
It was the most touching moment that had ever happened in Alicia's life.
