Redmption 344
Redmption 344
Zack didn't respond, and I instantly felt a chill, reaching out to grab his arm.
"Mr. Gildon! Mr. Gildon..."
With a heavy gasp, Zack slowly opened his eyes. He looked at me, his gaze somewhat unfocused." Maddie, I almost couldn't wake up just now."
I immediately became anxious. "Mr. Gildon, I'll call the doctor now."
But Zack held me back, his voice weak. "It's nothing. There's no need to make a fuss. This isn't the first time this has happened. It's just sleep paralysis."
I had heard of that before, but I'd only treated it as a joke. Now that Zack was sick with cancer, I fear this wasn't as simple as sleep paralysis. It could be a sign of his worsening condition.
I wasn't a doctor, but I had some common sense. Besides, I had a doctor friend like Lisa to consult.
"Mr. Gildon, you should let the doctor take a look. I'm worried about you." I insisted on calling the doctor.
The doctor came and did some routine checks, saying there wasn't any problem. Zack's condition earlier was likely due to being in a deep sleep. He could feel someone calling him and even respond, but he just couldn't wake up.
"See, I told you it was nothing." Zack laughed at me for making a fuss.
He didn't realize how his face looked, and I didn't want to say anything. I couldn't let him see how sad I was, so I had to say, "It's better to be careful. Look at you, always saying you're fine, and now you're lying here."
"As people age, it's like a machine that requires upkeep, nothing out of the ordinary." Zack seemed to be taking it in stride.
I had to admit that Zack's mindset had always been quite positive. Otherwise, he wouldn't have been able to tolerate Bree's erratic and unpredictable behavior.
Despite being someone who was so laid-back, he was still ill. It was said that illnesses were born from the mind. Although his cancer wasn't caused by a moment of rage, Chris' affair was certainly the catalyst.
And I was one of the sparks that set off the trigger. If I hadn't been part of the equation, Zack wouldn't have gotten so riled up.
"Mr. Gildon, at your age, you need to learn to let go. Don't worry about anything you can't control. Let go of your desire to control your children's lives," I said, pausing for a moment. "Chris and I have already come to this point, whoever he chooses, you and Bree should just let it be."
Zack didn't say a word, which meant he was still sulking. This old man, though often easygoing, could be quite stubborn at times.
I started massaging his arm. "Mr. Gildon, do you believe in destiny?"
He didn't respond, so I sighed softly. "I do. I believe what happened between Chris and me was meant to be."
Fate had denied them the comforts of a loving family. Chapter 344
I wasn't sure if my words had been too downbeat, but Zack shook his head. "Maddie, your parents didn't believe in destiny when they were alive, and they didn't just accept things as they were. Zack was right. I recalled my parents saying when I was young that our fate was in our own hands. As long as we didn't give in to fate or surrender to destiny, we could turn our fate around and alter the course of events.
Yet, fate had other plans and took their lives from them.
The memory of the fatal car accident weighed heavily on my heart, and my mind wandered to my doubts about Zack. "Mr. Gildon, I'm sorry."
Zack smiled. "Why are you suddenly saying this, kid?"
"Mr. Gildon, I went to investigate my parents' accident. I went to the traffic police department and looked into the accident report from that year." I confessed honestly.
Zack was silent for a few seconds, then sighed. "You're such a stubborn child."NôvelDrama.Org is the owner.
"Right, I'm still as strong-willed and stubborn as ever. You know me all too well," I said, poking fun at myself.
Zack shook his head helplessly. "Kid..."
I gave him a firm squeeze. "Mr. Gildon, when you call me that, it makes me feel like I'm still a child."
