I looked for Lisa, who was coincidentally at home. “Hey, you called me late at night the other day. What happened? I was exhausted from the operation, so I didn’t call you back. Were you sick?” she recalled upon seeing me.
Kicking off my shoes, I entered her house. “If I were sick, Liz, I would’ve been defeated by now.”
Lisa wrapped her arm around my shoulders. “What’s up? Are you mad at something?”
“Nothing. You’re busy, and I don’t wanna bother you with my trivial matters.” I did not mention Brandon falling sick.
She did not believe me. “You called me after midnight. Surely, it’s nothing trivial.”
“It’s Brandon.” I gave in at last, not wanting Lisa to worry excessively about me.
Lisa gave me half of her freshly blended watermelon juice. “That boy is getting good. Don’t mess this up, or you’ll regret it your whole life, Maddie.”
However, my mind was still troubled about Chris. I took a sip of the juice. “Chris and I are completely
done.”
She was confused. “Isn’t that old news?”
I gazed into the distance. “It’s official this time.”
Seemingly seen through my emotions, Lisa clinked glasses with me. “Congrats!”
Her response amused me. “Hey, at least Chris was good to you.”
“And? He wasn’t good to you.” Lisa was truly my devoted friend. “Enough of him. Let’s enjoy our juice and eat out later!” She clinked glasses with me again.
“I don’t wanna. I’m not feeling it.” I rejected her offer.
She ignored my refusal and even dragged me along. After our meal, let’s hit the bar and check out hot
men.”
Outside of Lisa’s doctor persona, she was no different than a city girl. Indeed, one could not judge a book
by its cover.
There was a new restaurant in town, and Lisa wanted to treat me to their foie gras. Coincidentally, this restaurant was right beside the cafe where Jewel was waiting for me.
While still in the car, I could see her lonely figure sitting in the cafe through the window. She stared into the distance, as though she was in a daze. Frankly, she looked… pitiful.
Two hours had passed since she last texted and called me. It seemed like she was serious about waiting for me.
I recalled from her last message that she had something to tell me, and so it piqued my interest. More Importantly, I wouldn’t be able to enjoy my foie gras if she sat there and waited for me the
whole night. Thus, I headed straight to the cafe and signaled to Lisa ‘I’ll go talk to her. Go ahead and order without me.
“Alright.” Lisa did not stop me. She knew Jewel was pregnant, and her motto was to never involve an Innocent child in an adult’s mistake.
As I sat across Jewel, she was taken aback by my presence. I guessed she didn’t anticipate my arrival.
“I thought you’d never come,” she spoke sarcastically. NôvelDrama.Org © content.
“I’m here for your baby’s sake.” I was straightforward.
Jewel smiled wryly. “Sure. What would you like? Coffee or…”
“That’d be unnecessary. Just spill. I have a dinner to attend.” I rejected her.
Her face turned uneasy at my words. Although she tried to appear gentle and warm, her forced smile ultimately betrayed her facade.
“Go on, Ms. Massey. What’s it about? Is it about Chris?” continued to be upfront.
Lowering her head, Jewel looked at her belly before gazing at me. “Madeline, do you think Chris‘ parents adore kids?”
I was startled. Just as I was pondering about it, she added, “Do you think they’ll accept my baby?”
