“Okay, everyone out!” I clapped my hands.

For some reason, it sounded much cooler when Marvin said it

It was my first morning in the new house, and to show my gratitude, I had decided to do something useful for once and make Marvin breakfast.

The maids in the kitchen shot me confused looks, but followed my order either way as they were probably scared to get into trouble with Marvin.

It took me some time to gather the ingredients, but before I knew it, I was already busy preparing breakfast. Just when I was about to flip over a pancake, I received a call from Roma

“Yes?” I answered the phone.

“Lena, I’m literally about to shoot up this entire place!” Rona shouted. I turned the stove off and put her on speaker.

“Wait, what?” I asked, confused. “Calm down.”

Rona did the complete opposite and started sobbing over the phone. “I can’t calm down. I’m pissed!” She choked in between sniffles.

“Rona, what happened?” I asked as I grabbed three plates from the cabinet. Rona having a meltdown was not something new, but this time it sounded different.

“You don’t have to come to work today.” Rona told me. It took me a few seconds before her words finally got through to me. Exclusive © content by N(ô)ve/l/Drama.Org.

“Hello?”

Rona sighed. “Some guy showed up at the door with this huge bill which I can’t pay, all of the investors pulled out- and I just can’t take it anymore!”

“Oh, no! “I played along, but all I could think about was her telling me that I might be jobless. What was left for me? Okay, maybe I needed to stop being so overdramatic-I could find a new job.

“I’m so stressed and angry, “Rona complained.

“Can’t you steal some weed from the Castillo’s, so we can sell it or smoke it ourselves?”

I widened my eyes at Rona’s bad joke and covered my phone with my hand-removing her from speaker. “Don’t do anything crazy, and wait until I show up for work-okay?”

“Elena, you’re not Jesus-you can’t fix this! “Rona attacked me. Then she shouldn’t have called me in the first place So much for me trying to help out.

“I know, but we’ll figure it out.”

“Fine, I’ll see you later!” Rona huffed. “And don’t forget the weed!”

Flustered, I ended the conversation and looked around to see if someone might’ve heard us. Between

Tiago refusing to give me a name and me slowly getting homesick. I already had way too much on my plate, and I really couldn’t add anything else.

“Where are the maids?” Marvin walked into the kitchen, He wore a clean and nice black suit, with a black- tie. Blinded by his handsomeness, I almost dropped the plate in my hand. The formal side of

Marvin was something unusual and reminded me of our first meeting.

“Don’t worry. I kicked them out.” I told Marvin. What would be the reason for the dress code? Did he have a business meeting?

“Why?” Marvin looked puzzled. Maybe he felt comfortable letting others do work for him, but I didn’t. I grew up in a household where I had to take care of myself.

“Why? Because I want to make you breakfast.”

“Why?”

I grabbed his hand, leading him to the table. “Because I’m grateful for all you’ve done for me, come on, sit down.”

Marvin followed my instructions, but not before giving me a suspicious frown. “Is this one of your games again?”

“One of my games?”

“Yes, your poisoning game?”

“Poisoning game?”

What did he even mean by that? Marvin shook his head, laughing. “Never mind, what did you make me?”

I grabbed his plate and placed it in front of him with a satisfied smile on my lips. “An egg and cheese omelet, pancakes, salad-and fresh orange juice.”

Marvin looked from his plate to my eyes, with an apologetic look on his face. “Elena, I didn’t bring you here to work.” He told me.

“I know,” I said. “I just can’t see the point of me being here if I can’t do anything in return.”

Besides that, it wasn’t a crime to show him that I could be everything he needed.

Still, I didn’t want him to feel as if I was taking advantage of him or his money.

“That’s funny. That’s exactly what I was thinking.” Panther walked in. I automatically rolled my eyes at his unwanted comment as he walked to the counter.

“Looks good Elena, I’m starving!” He praised the food.

“Yes, you can take care of your own plate.”

“Of course, because I’m not Marvin.” Panther teased.

Being alone with Marvin seemed to be some impossible mission because it almost seemed like Panther was glued to his ass. Nice guy, but the best would be to ignore his presence.

I sat down next to Marvin and grabbed the fork from his hands. “You should try the eggs first,” I told him.

“They’re really good.”

“Is that so?”

I nodded my head, poking the eggs with the fork, and moved it to Marvin’s lip. “Why does Marvin get the baby service?” Panther mocked me, but I ignored him and watched as Marvin took a bite.

“How does it tastes?” I asked almost immediately. I knew I was good in the kitchen. I was just fishing for compliments. Marvin’s compliments.

“It’s delicious, really.” Marvin nodded his head, acknowledging my skills. “Where did you learn to cook like that?”

The proud smile on my lips had quickly disappeared as I thought about my family. “I used to cook for my dad and my brother.”

Who was taking care of dad?

What was he eating for breakfast?

Marvin, who noticed the sad look on my face, tilted his head to cheer me up and showed me a bright smile. “Did I say something wrong?” He asked. I laughed at his unexpected reaction. “No, it’s not you.”

Panther coughed. “So Elena, are you doing anything productive today?” He stuffed his mouth with some food. “This is really good, by the way. You should become the next master chef!”

Strangely enough, I slowly got used to Panther and his over-the-top reactions that it didn’t even surprise me anymore. “I’m working today.” I told him.

“So are we.”

Of course, they were. The only difference was that our ideas of going to our jobs were completely different. Going to their drug lab, murdering, and scamming people was not the same as bartending. Calm down, Elena. Maybe that wasn’t even the case.

“What time will you be back?” I asked.

“I can’t say, but don’t wait up for me.” Marvin got ahead of himself. That was not the reason for my question. “I won’t. You’re not the only one with a job.”

Marvin laughed. “You’re still working?”

“Uh…yes?” I spoke. “I can’t depend on you forever.”

Although I would not have any issue with that, because staying at Marvin’s place was something I could get used to.

“So, how are you going to work?” Marvin asked, worried. That was a good question. I hadn’t even thought about that myself. “I don’t know.”

“I’ll tell the maids you can have access to any car you’d like, or I can let someone drive you-”

“I’ll take the car, thank you!” I cut him off. I liked the attention, but having a personal driver went a bit too far for me. After seeing all of the cars he owned, I was sure he could miss one. “Quick question, do you really need that many cars?” I wondered.

Marvin grew a shy smile on his lips. “No, but they were a welcome back gift from our business partners.”

I couldn’t help but wonder what kind of business partners he meant. Would they be just as shitty as Rona’s?

“It’s not really a gift. It’s more so a bribe!” Panther, who had cleared his plate, stated as he left the kitchen.

A bribe? What could he mean by that?

My eyes moved to the uncomfortable look on Marvin’s face. “Elena, are you free tomorrow?”

“Yes?”

“Good.” Marvin nodded. “I thought I could take you shopping and afterward perhaps take you out for dinner?”

Was this his way of asking me on a date, or was I just overthinking things as usual?

“Sure.” I remained calm. “But why so formal?”

top

Maybe if I pushed him just a little, he would admit that it was indeed a date. Marvin placed his hand on of mine. “I haven’t been completely honest with you, and if you’re staying here, I think it’s time for you to know what you’re getting yourself into.” He spoke.

“I want you to trust me, and I don’t want there to be any secrets between us.”

For some reason, those words made me feel nervous. Whatever he had to tell me tomorrow sounded serious. Was he finally going to confess? Was he going to kick me out right after telling me I could stay?

“I already trust you-but do I need to worry?” I asked nervously. The laugh which had escaped from between Marvin’s lips made me feel more at ease. “No, of course not. Never!” He spoke.

So that wasn’t it.

I felt a sharp pain in my chest as I thought about his words. There was a slight chance that he would tell me the truth about the Castillo’s, which meant I had to tell him the truth about my family.

It would make things so much easier, but at the same time, I had no idea how Marvin was going to take it. Panther told me to keep my identity a secret for a reason, and he was someone close to him.

“Marvin, I don’t need to know everything…you know that, right?” I hinted. A ‘date’ with Marvin was what I wanted from the start, which was why I couldn’t believe that I was actually sabotaging my perfect dream.

It was all for a greater cause.

I did not have a choice. Marvin’s reaction to my secret could go either way, and that was not what I needed at the moment. I needed to clear Marvin’s name and save my dad’s job.

“I know, but this is not something small.” Marvin smiled. “It’s a step I have to take… for you.”

For met

Marvin, it’s time to go!” Panther shouted, interrupting our moment.

“So what do you say? Are you free tomorrow?” Marvin asked.

“Yes,” I forced a smile. “I am.”
