Chapter 565
Chapter 565
“Was it Matthew who set the whole thing up?”
“It’s not out of the question. And because of this, Mr. and Mrs. Chambers‘ marriage fell apart. Mrs. Chambers, unfortunately, dragged Avery into it, who was already the black sheep of the family. He was banished to Helgen, left to fend for himself for fifteen long years, forgotten by everyone. Mrs. Chambers‘ health deteriorated over the years, and Avery, without the backing of the Chambers family, barely got by financially. Life in Helgen was tough, to say the least.”
Evadne looked surprised, “Are you actually defending your rival?”
Thaddeus chuckled, “No, I’m just stating facts. Right is right, wrong is wrong. Even if he’s my enemy, I won’t blur those lines.”
Evadne was moved and wrapped her arms around his neck, planting a quick kiss on his lips.
It was this honesty and openness that made Avery fall short in comparison.
“So, can you blame him for harboring hatred? If I were in his shoes, I’d do whatever it took to come back and avenge my mother,” Thaddeus said with a distant look in his eyes.
“But that’s still no excuse for the path he’s taken.”
Evadne still shook her head, “Besides, if he wanted revenge, he should have gone after the Chambers family directly. Why harm you, Cassius, and Debby? When he was in Helgen, he must have known Darcy was my brother–in–law! He claims to care for me, yet he ruthlessly persecutes my family behind my back. Just because Cassius didn’t like him, in Star Island, he even conspired with Eden to take Cassius out without anyone noticing. He’s miserable, so he wants everyone else to suffer with him. Anyone who doesn’t fall in line, even those dear to the people he ‘likes,‘ he’s willing to put them in
harm’s way! How many more bridges does he need to burn before he’s satisfied? He’s too selfish, too cold–blooded!”
Thaddeus blinked, not sure what to say.
It seemed a bit petty to join in the rant against Avery.
After a moment of silence, Evadne spoke up, puzzled, “How did he manage to rise from the ashes after being banished to Helgen, with no one to help him, and build his business so big?”
Thaddeus‘ eyes sparkled, “Good question. Evadne, I’ve been wondering the same thing and have been looking into it in secret.”
“Even you, with your position in the Abernathy Group, had your grandfather’s support. How could Avery not have had a powerful benefactor behind him?”
A hint of suspicion crossed Evadne’s luminous eyes, “In Helgen, there must be someone influential and powerful backing him up, using him as a public figurehead to carry out dangerous trades they couldn’t be seen handling, even getting involved in drug trafficking, manipulating elections, and eliminating anyone who stood in their way.”
Thaddeus stared at her, his heart racing, unable to resist leaning in for a deep, passionate kiss.
Her analysis hit the nail on the head, they were on the same wavelength!
“Mmm.”
Evadne gasped, finally pushing him away, “If we can figure out who’s been backing Avery, we might be able to get to the heart of it all, bring down his empire, and uproot him once and for all!”
Thaddeus‘ Adam’s apple bobbed, a hint of jealousy creeping in.
The girl’s mind was always on how to deal with Avery. Though he knew she was driven by justice, she seemed to have no time to think about him, to cling to him.
“Evadne, what you’re thinking is exactly what’s on my mind. I’m investigating this to find another angle to dismantle Avery.”
“When I have time, I’ll reach out to Debby and Darcy to see if there’s a way to break through.” Evadne’s frustration dissipated, replaced with renewed zeal! NôvelDrama.Org © 2024.
Thaddeus smiled indulgently, squeezing her waist gently, “It’s getting late, shall we go to bed?”
“Uh. I’m still so full.” Evadne patted her round belly.
“Kayaking?”
Evadne’s eyes curved, teasing him, “You believe anything I say, don’t you? It’s pitch dark; we’d end up capsizing into the lake.”
Then how about we head back to the room and do some other digestive activities?” His voice was deep and seductive, breaths heavy with enticement.
Evadne’s heart fluttered, flustered in his arms, “Then, then let’s just go kayaking.”
Thaddeus couldn’t help but laugh at her response.
She couldn’t possibly be tired of him, could she?
It seemed he needed to spice things up a bit.
