Chapter 275
Chapter 275
When Thaddeus was discharged from the hospital, the backlog of work that had piled up during his hospital stay kept him busy for three straight days and nights. These days, his health had been fluctuating. He was surviving on medications and the IV drips Evadne had given him, hoping and praying for a swift recovery. After all, how was he supposed to protect the ones he loved with his frail health?
“Mr. Thaddeus, it’s time for your meds,” Gordon said, placing the medicine and a bottle of mineral water on a tray in front of Thaddeus.
Thaddeus was engrossed in his documents, “I’m busy. Later,” he said without looking up.
“Well, if you don’t take your medicine on time, I will have to report your disobedience to Mrs. Abernathy,” Gordon said, giving Thaddeus a stern look. “She contacted me the other day and asked me to ensure you take your medicine on time. If there are any issues, I am to report them to her immediately.”
Thaddeus reluctantly picked up the medicine and the water bottle. Gordon nodded in approval, a wry smile formed on his lips.
He felt a pang of regret thinking about how obedient Thaddeus has been recently. If only he had been this obedient three years ago, he and Mrs. Abernathy might have already had given birth to a bunch of children.
“What’s the latest with Mrs. Abernathy?” Thaddeus asked, swallowing his medicine with a grimace as the bitter taste hit his tongue. He reached into his drawer for a piece of chocolate, hoping to wash away the unpleasant taste.
He had found the chocolate, a leftover snack from Evadne, and had kept it treasured in his office drawer. It was his comfort food whenever he felt stressed.
“I heard that Chairman Emeric’s daughter, Myra, is having her birthday soon. Mrs. Abernathy seems to be busy planning for it at the hotel,” Gordon informed him. “Myra, the former actress?” Thaddeus asked casually.
“Yes, that’s her! My mother’s idol! I remember watching her shows every day when I was a kid. My mother even had a dress made that was identical to one Myra wore in a show. It was a shame that she retired early,” Gordon reminisced with a tinge of regret.
“Why did she retire unexpectedly?” Thaddeus asked.
“Apparently, she was accused of using illegal drugs. The scandal almost ruined her career. Chairman Emeric managed to clear her name, but the damage was done, and she decided to retire,” Gordon explained. “Oh, I really admire Chairman Emeric. They all say that he is proud of his love and has a beautiful woman back. He will lend a helping hand when the beauty needs help the most. No woman can withstand it!
Gordon said as he glanced at Thaddeus expression, his tone inevitably a bit sarcastic.
Sure enough, Thaddeus’s jaw line was stiff, only feeling that Gordon’s words were slightly harsh.
The result was even harsher. “With all due respect, your former father–in–law can deal with so many wives in the family and they are all obedient to him. Why can’t you handle Mrs. Abernathy alone? Otherwise, why don’t you even make an appointment with Chairperson Emeric to learn from him?”
Thaddeus‘ handsome face was deep, and he bit out a few words between his teeth. “Learn from him? Do you want me to ask Chairman Emeric how to handle his daughter? Are you insane to say such nonsense?”
Gordon was scared, “Ahem. Mr. Thaddeus, I’m worried for you too! With the speed at which you and Mrs. Abernathy have pressed the slow–motion button, will I be able to see you two reunite in my lifetime? You saved Mrs. Abernathy last time, but Mrs. Abernathy is still cold to you. In the past two days, except for calling me to ask about your situation as a routine, she hasn’t come to see you once. I really feel sorry for you and feel sad for you.”
In the past, whenever she heard that Mr. Thaddeus was coming back from outside, Mrs. Abernathy would prepare a table of good dishes early and then stand outside the villa eagerly, waiting for Mr. Thaddeus to come home.”
Back then, she loved him with all her heart, and her heart was on him.
Now, the way she looked at Mr. Thaddeus was so cold that Gordon felt suffocated as a bystander.
Many things were really lost, and they could never be found again.
“No harm.”
Thaddeus breathed a sigh of relief and rubbed his tight fists on his knees silently. “No matter what attitude she has towards me now, I will never give up on her.” The conversation was interrupted by a knock on the door. Thaddeus’s secretary announced, “Mr. Thaddeus, Mr. Jareth is here to see you.”
“Let him in,” Thaddeus said.
As the door opened, Jareth strolled in, humming a tune, his eyes sparkling with mischief. He was dressed in a striking white tailored suit that contrasted with his tanned muscular chest. A platinum necklace hung around his neck, adding a wild and sexy charm to his appearance.
In Elmsworth, only Jareth could pull off such a flamboyant yet elegant look.
“Looking good, buddy. Seems like my sister–in–law’s home remedies worked wonders on you,” Jareth slouched onto the couch, obviously relieved to see Thaddeus looking much better.
Ever since Thaddeus had confessed his feelings for Evadne right in front of Jareth, he had reverted back to their old banter.
Thaddeus heart fluttered at the mention of the term “sister–in–law“, obviously pleased.
But he coolly raised an eyebrow at Jareth, who was flaunting a bit too much chest, “If you’re going to keep dressing like this, don’t bother coming into the Abernathy Group.”
Jareth retorted, “Why not?”
“This is a workspace, not a brothel.”
Thaddeus glanced down once more, “I don’t want any unnecessary rumors about my preferences.”
Gordon, who had been listening, struggled to contain his laughter.
Jareth squinted his eyes and finally got the joke, “Damn! I’m straight as a die! Even if you wanted me, I wouldn’t do it! I’m not into guys, okay?”
Thaddeus remained silent, causing Gordon to burst into laughter.
“Enough. I don’t have time for your nonsense. What do you want?” Thaddeus asked.
“Look at this.”
Jareth pulled out an invitation from his pocket, waving it around with a smug smile.
“What is it?”
“It’s an invitation from Ms. Evadne herself, inviting me to Myra’s birthday party this weekend.”
Jareth’s giddy expression was almost unbearable, like a cat that had gotten the cream.
Thaddeus’s eyes darkened, a surge of jealousy rising within him, “So what? Given your family’s status in Elmsworth, isn’t it natural for you to be invited?” “But considering your family’s status, did you receive an invite?”
“Can we stop with this nonsense?”
Thaddeus, usually calm and collected, was notoriously short–tempered when it came to anything involving Evadne.
“Relax, I’m just teasing you.”
Jareth knew Thaddeus was upset about not receiving an invitation from Evadne, so he decided to change the subject. He pulled out another invitation from his back pocket, crumpled from sitting on it, “Here. This one’s from your wicked stepmother. Wouldn’t you know it, she and Myra have decided to celebrate their birthdays on the same day, both in Elmsworth. Seems like they’re trying to one-up each other.”
“What? Elspeth and Myra share the same birthday?” Thaddeus frowned, clearly surprised.
“Mr. Thaddeus, if I’m not mistaken, Elspeth’s birthday is on a Thursday, not over the weekend.”
Gordon scratched his head in confusion, “Why would she move her birthday to the weekend? Is she really trying to compete with Myra?”
“Is there some personal grudge between Elspeth and Myra?” Thaddeus, quick to cut to the chase, asked.
“Uh. I’m not too sure about that. But I do remember that they used to be signed to the same TV network. Myra was always the lead, while Elspeth was usually a supporting character.”
Thaddeus nodded thoughtfully, “Understood. Keep an eye on Elspeth these next few days. If she makes any moves, let me know immediately.” Meanwhile, at the Windermere Estate.
Elspeth was in her room with Glynnis, selecting a dress for her birthday party.
Every surface was covered with luxurious evening gowns, each more expensive than the last, yet they were scattered around like scraps of cloth.
“How tacky! These are this year’s limited editions! The designers must have lost their minds. Even a dog wouldn’t wear these!”
Glynnis was dissatisfied with every dress, tossing them onto the floor and even stepping on them, “Mom, do you know who you are? You’re the wife of the chairman of the Abernathy Group, a former shining star in the entertainment industry! Are they really trying to appease you with these rags? It’s too much!”
Elspeth took a heavy gulp of red wine, seething with rage.
Due to Evadne’s repeated interference, Elspeth’s reputation in high society had plummeted. Even though she was Frederic’s wife, the major luxury brands were unwilling to sponsor her with jewelry and clothing.
For example, she wanted to select two evening gowns for her birthday party, but no brand was willing to lend her a gown, even if she offered to buy it outright. They were afraid that she would tarnish their brand.
“Mom, you moved your birthday party to the weekend specifically to outshine Myra. If you can’t borrow the perfect gown, it’ll backfire and people will laugh at you,” Glynnis said worriedly.
“Laugh at me? Why would they laugh at me?”
Elspeth slammed her glass onto the table, the wine sloshing out, “I am the mistress of the Abernathy family, your father’s one and only wife. What is Myra? She was no match for me in the past and she certainly isn’t now! To put it nicely, she’s Emeric’s wife, but to put it bluntly, she’s just a concubine! In the old days, she wouldn’t even be allowed at the dinner table. She’s the real joke here!” NôvelDrama.Org copyrighted © content.
“Right, Mom, you’re absolutely right!” Glynnis quickly agreed.
“I either won’t wear anything or I’ll wear the best!”
Elspeth rose abruptly, a determined glint in her eyes, “Find a way to contact Haron. I want to borrow a gown designed by Haron, no matter the cost!”
