Chapter 268
Chapter 268
Eventually, Suri handed over the two newly developed drugs for internal and external injuries to Evadne, both produced by the Bright Group.
The next day, Evadne sent Jason to deliver the medicines to Thaddeus.
Thaddeus, who was initially reluctant to show his vulnerable side to Jason – his love rival who seemed to be at an upper hand, had his spirits dashed when he saw that Jason had come alone without Evadne.
“Where’s Evadne?”
Thaddeus leaned against the headboard of the bed, his handsome figure exuding a sense of desolation, his gaze filled with a hint of self–pity.
Unfortunately for him, Evadne was not present to witness his act.
“Miss Evadne is busy. She asked me to deliver the medicines to you.”
Jason placed the costly and rare drugs on the bedside table, his gaze cold as he looked at Thaddeus’s pale face. Miss Evadne said that one drug should be applied three times a day, and the other should be taken once a day. She will send me again with more in two weeks. These drugs work like targeted therapies. They do have some side effects like nausea and dizziness. If you have severe adverse reactions, you need to inform Miss Evädne immediately. Do you understand?”
Thaddeus remained silent, his brows furrowed.
“Won’t these drugs cause any problems? They seem quite poterit.” Gordon, worried about Thaddeus’s discomfort, murmured under his breath.
“Well, it’s your life. If you’re afraid that Miss Evadne is trying to harm you, you can choose not to take them. It’s up to you.”
With that, Jason turned to leave.
“I won’t take these drugs,” Thaddeus spoke up, his voice faint.
Jason spun around in surprise. “You won’t? What do you mean?”
Before coming, Evadne had specifically instructed him to make sure that Thaddeus takes his medicine. But now, Thaddeus was refusing to take them.
How was he supposed to report back to her?
‘T’ll take them only if Evadne comes to see me. Otherwise, I won’t accept her kindness.”
Thaddeus maintained his stubborn stance, his eyes filled with desolation. Thirteen years ago, I saved her life. Thirteen years later, I did it again. Even if we’re divorced, even if she despises me, she can’t deny that I saved her life. She can’t Just dismiss me like this.”
“Thaddeus?”
Jason was cut off by Thaddeus’s firm tone. “At the very least, this time, I want her to come and take care of me.”
Take care of him? With affection?
Jason was so infuriated that his knuckles turned white.
Thaddeus was the least qualified in this world to demand Evadne!
“Exactly!”
Gordon, who usually lacked insight, quickly understood his boss’s intentions and joined in. “Mr. Thaddeus has suffered so much over the years to save Ms. Evadne! He’s in constant pain, can’t eat properly, can’t sleep well, and even coughed up blood this morning. I’m scared that he might not wake up one day! Is this how Ms. Evadne treats the man who saved her life? That’s too heartless!”
Thaddeus glared at Gordon, who was clearly overacting.
Jason gritted his teeth and left the room without another word.
As soon as the door closed, Thaddeus, who had been so righteous a moment ago, suddenly leaned forward, his chest heaving, and coughed up a mouthful of blood!
“Mr. Thaddeus?”
Gordon was terrified. He frantically pressed the call button and scrambled to clean up Thaddeus’s blood stained lips. “Mr. Thaddeus! You can’t go on like this! Stop holding a grudge against Mrs. Abernathy! Since Mrs. Abernathy has sent the medicine, let’s just take it!”
“No.” Thaddeus stubbornly refused, his eyes filled with deep sorrow. “This is the only chance I have now to have her by my side, to spend time with her. Even if it costs me my life, I want to see Evadne, I want to fight for this chance!”
“What? That scoundrel refuses to receive the medicine? Why?”
Evadne was having dinner with her family when Jasón pulled her aside to tell her the news. She was so furious that she lost her appetite
“He said he’ll only take the medicine if he sees you,”
Jason was fuming. “He’s just trying to take advantage of you! You’ve already done more than enough for him. Let him fend for himself. Don’t bother with him anymore!”
“Prepare the car. We’re going to Elmsworth!”
Evadne, her eyes red with anger, issued the order and stormed off to change her clothes.
“Miss Evadne!”
Jason watched her hurriedly leave, his heart aching.
He had kept Thaddeus’s hospitalization a secret from the Abernathy family.
Being in his position, even his health status had to be a secret. There were too many people within and outside the Abernathy Group coveting his position. If anything happened to him, it could be used as an excuse to dethrone him.
All these years. He had been walking on thin ice.
All because he wasn’t Frederic’s favorite son.
That night, the only visitor Thaddeus received was still Jareth.
Thaddeus hadn’t mentioned his hemoptysis to him today, fearing it might cause unnecessary worry and delay his search for a solution.
“Man, you’re in a sorry state, Thaddeus.”
Jareth, with an expression of unabashed delight in someone else’s misfortune, lounged lazily on the couch. Seeing Thaddeus pale and haggard, as if a flower on the brink of wilting, he cquldn’t resist poking fun, “Just a few months ago, you were the life of the party, Thaddeus.”
Thaddeus barely lifted his eyelashes, “What are you getting at?”
“Back then, you had a gentle doting wife at home, and a passionate lover waiting in the wings. Life was good, wasn’t it?”
“Uh. Jareth.” Thaddeus looked ashy, almost coughing up blood again from anger.
You’d complain every time we met, saying how suffocated you felt at home with that overly attentive woman. I couldn’t help but feel envious, you know? Having a thousand servants at
your beck and call doesn’t compare to having a caring and loving woman by your side.”
Jareth sighed, a hint of resentment in his tone. He felt sorry for Evadne, and regretful for his friend’s loss of such a wonderful woman.
1 didn’t really mind Evadne back then.”
Remembering Evadne’s kindness to him, Thaddeus felt as if a blunt knife was cutting into his heart, “I know how much she cared and loved me. I was cold to her only because I wanted her to face reality and divorce me soon. I couldn’t offer her a future then, and her staying with me was a waste of her time and life.”
“So, what about now? Are you trying to rekindle your relationship with Evadne using some sort of friendly approach?” Jareth tilted his head, lazily fishing out a cigarette and placing it between his lips. Published by Nôv'elD/rama.Org.
Remembering they were in a hospital, he didn’t light it up, merely satisfying his oral fixation.
After a long silence, Thaddeus took a deep breath and whispered, “Jareth, I think I’ve fallen for her.”
Damn!
The cigarette in Jareth’s mouth almost fell out when he heard this bombshell!
Tve fallen for Evadne. So, I want her to come back to me. I want to try to pursue her.” Thaddeus suddenly looked up, his voice trembling slightly as he confessed his feelings.
His naturally captivating eyes were now earnest and sincere.
“You? Pursuing a woman? Are you sure you’re up to it?” Jareth asked incredulously.
“People have their firsts. If I can’t, I’ll make it work.”
Thaddeus gave him a sidelong glance, “Besides, if I can’t, I still have you as my assumingly reliable wingman, don’t I?
“Hey! Don’t you trust me? Are you uncomfortable if you don’t insult me?” Jareth narrowed his eyes.
“I know you’re not up to it either, otherwise, you would’ve won her over by now, wouldn’t you?”
Thaddeus continued his verbal onslaught, “But now we’re in a state of desperation, so I’ll have to rely on you reluctantly.”
He had never pursued a woman before. He had never chased after Acacia. They had known each other since they were young, and it was always Acacia who had made the moves. But for Evadne, he was willing to put aside his pride and go all out.
It’s not that I’m not good at wooing women, it’s just that Evadne has everything: beauty, money, status, and talent. She’s impenetrable. What can possibly offer to attract her?”
Jareth grumbled, “I thought she was a hopeless romantic, given how deeply she loved you. Turns out she’s a career woman who would choose power over a handsome man. How am I supposed to win her over?”
Thaddeus‘ lips curled up into a rare smile.
“Besides, my friend, not to rain on your parade, but you’re not her treasure anymore, you’re just a blade of grass beside a dung hill. Winning Evadne back will be as hard as reaching the sky. Are you ready to face countless failures?”
“It’s okay. I’ll just keep pursuing her. Whether she accepts or not, that’s her call.”
Thaddeus was resolute, his eyes determined and without hesitation, “I believe my life ahead is still long. I won’t fall for any other woman. One step at a time.”
Just as he finished his sentence, the door to the room was flung open with a bang.
Evadne, carrying the chill of early winter, walked in with her hair swaying, her eyes shining menacingly.
“Thaddeus! You refuse to take the medicine I sent unless you see me first. Are you playing with your life? What do you mean by this?”
As soon as she entered the room, the first thing she saw was Jareth, lounging on the couch with a cigarette between his lips. Enraged, she snatched the cigarette from his mouth, threw it on the floor, and crushed it under her high heel.
“Are you out of your mind? He has lung injuries and can’t inhale smoke. Are you his friend or the grim reaper sent to claim his life?”
Seeing her upset, Thaddeus smiled with delight.
“But, Evadne, I didn’t even light it!” Jareth protested.
“Get out of here, now!” Evadne pointed towards the door.
Jareth cast a pleading look at Thaddeus, who simply replied, “When she says leave, you leave.
Jareth thought, “Damn! You’re the most disloyal friend, Thaddeus!”
After Jareth left, only Thaddeus and Evadne remained in the hospital room.
