Denied by Destiny: Trapped in the Shadows of the Mate Bond

Chapter 71

Hector POV

The speed in which I'm driving isn't as fast returning to the Dark Phantom pack as it was leaving it. I needed time to cool off, the drive back being the perfect time frame to do so.

I didn't want Kaia to get involved, her reaction to the invitation was proof that she wanted nothing more to do with Than. I wouldn't let her keep getting dragged into my twisted past with Than and Alora. Kaia had been through enough.

I was followed the entire journey back. A few selected Amber Desert warriors given the task to make sure I returned back to my pack...keeping a watchful eye on me.

It was soul destroying to leave Alora having only just seen her. I didn't want to leave her, I wanted to jump over that gate and pull her into my arms...remove her from that toxic environment.

Leaving her left a pain in my chest...something didn't feel right but I couldn't place it.

4 years she had been unconscious and he wouldn't even let me talk to her...hold her. Hold what is supposed to be mine.

Suddenly, that same pain in my chest intensifies, causing me to temporarily swerve the car off the road.

I slam my breaks down hard as the car skids on mud. I look in the rearview mirror to find the vehicles following me have also come to a sudden stop.

My hands rub at my chest, as I feel my face grimace from the pain....until it stops as soon as it started.

'I could sense that Alora hadn't been marked, so what was it...what was causing me such pain...

As soon as I enter the Dark Phantom pack gates the warriors following me speed off. I knew they wouldn't intercept...clearly acting as a surveillance team for Than.

I'm surprised to find the music no longer blurring out into the pack grounds from the anniversary party. They can't have turned in for the night already. Last year's event didn't finish until 4am. I remember the hungover state of most of the warriors at training that morning, only 2 hours later.

It isn't until I enter the safe private sanctuary of my office that my emotions try to overwhelm me. Anger. so fierce that my skin feels as if it should be turning red and hot to touch.Content from NôvelDr(a)ma.Org.

The earlier chest pain now taking a back seat as anger pushes forward.

I had to leave her there...I need to be more creative in getting to her without Than being present.

I sit down at my desk, pouring myself a glass of whiskey... the glass resting at my temple. Trying to calm the beast within.

I slowly sip my drink, pouring another when Ezra bursts through my office door.

""Where were you?"

"I had to attend to a matter off site, why aren't you at the party. In fact, while you're here, could you ask Kaia to come here."

"That's not possible Alpha."

"Did she not go to the party when I left? She didn't go home alone did she?" Fuck, she probably did. I was a fucking idiot. As if learning your ex husband was going to mark another would keep you in the partying mood.

I was so blinded with my own rage that I failed to support Kaia. I failed her as an alpha....as a friend. "Yes she went home...alone. Alpha...".

"I know it's late, I'll let her sleep and wait until the morning. If you're passing her house tonight could you put this note under her door for the morning..."

I pick up a piece of paper and a pen, and start to write a note.

I want to refrain from waking her up through the mind-link if she is asleep. Hopefully she will get the note early in the morning and join me here for breakfast.

As I write her name out my wolf growls in my mind, that pain in my chest returning.

I hand the now folded note out to Ezra who seems reluctant to take it.

"Ezra...I'm tired, I've been through shit. Can you just do as I ask. I'll explain things to you in the morning." place my head in my hands, wanting to get to bed so that I can start making plans of actions first thing tomorrow morning. I need to get her out of there "Alpha. I tried but her wolf is back to full strength. She's fast. Faster than I expected even in human form."

I need to sleep. The headache was only increasing in intensity and Ezra wasn't making any sense. How much has he had to drink. ""Who is?"

"Kaia. She's fast. You must have felt it...."

I don't like the sound of what he is insinuating. My wolf manages to lunge forward, forcing me to stand up and rush over to Ezra. That pain....

"Where is she Ezra." I demand, my hands placed on Ezra's shoulders.

"She's gone Alpha."

Gone....

"I tried to stop her, we all did. Something must have happened."

My chest....that pain I felt whilst driving in the car. Oh fuck!

I was so engrossed with seeing Alora again I just assumed...

But it wasn't...it was Kaia.

"She rejected the pack...fuck!" My hands clump at my hair, pulling at the ends.

"We chased her for as far as we could but she entered human territory and seemed to know how to cover

her tracks well. She disappeared almost instantly..."

Fuck!

I'm running out of the Alpha house as quickly as my legs will let me. Ezra hot on my tail.

I run, cutting across the gardens to her house...not even bothering to knock as I open the door.

The thickness of silence greets me on the other side of the door. I head upstairs immediately only to find hardly any trace of her even living there.

A few clothes but nothing that screamed Kaia.

No no no...I've forced her hand. I'm now seeing her face as I left and understand the full impact of what I have done.

"Alpha?"

"I've made a terrible mistake haven't I Ezra?"

"I hope not."
