Chapter 23 Dancing with Him
Chapter 23 Dancing with Him
“Oh, no. Now I really can’t pay it back…” Alexia said woefully.
“Pay what?” Lynn looked at her quizzically.
“It’s nothing. I just mean my husband can’t pay off his credit card after spending so much renting this outfit.”
“The outfit on you was rented?”
“Do you really think he bought it? If he really was that rich, I wouldn’t need to work so hard every day.” Alexia said with a dry smile as her eyes fell elsewhere.
“You’re right, it’s rare to see you wear designer labels.” Lynn rubbed her chin as she thought.
Seeing Chaim walking up to the platform with the microphone, Alexia nudged Lynn with her elbow. “Alright, enough talking. It’s starting.”
Lynn immediately straightened her posture and shut her mouth.
On the stage, Chaim looked around. And his eyes seemed to fall on Alexia more often than not.
“Good evening everyone, I am Chaim Lancaster…”
He began his speech fluently. Then, remembering many foreign partners present, he repeated it in foreign languages as well in a fluent and authentic aristocratic accent that mesmerized the audience.
“I finally know how unfair God is,” Lynn muttered glumly.
“What do you mean?”
“I mean that God must’ve crafted Mr. Lancaster very carefully, whereas God must’ve thrown the rest of us together haphazardly.”
Alexia wanted to say something but failed. Nothing seemed wrong with this analogy…
“Aily.”
Alexia blinked. “What’s up?”
“What kind of woman do you think is worthy of a man as perfect as Mr. Lancaster?” This belongs to NôvelDrama.Org - ©.
Alexia froze for a moment, lowering her head as she replied with a blank expression. “I… I don’t know…”
He didn’t need to be matched with another woman, she yelled in heart, but just in her heart. He was already married to her.
“I guess she must be an equally perfect woman with a matched family background, appearance, and even ability with Mr. Lancaster.” Lynn analyzed fervently.
Alexia pouted and retorted, “No way, he’s already perfect enough. Why must he need an equally perfect woman?”
“Aily, what’s wrong with you? Why are you so upset?”
Seeing Lynn’s confused expression, Alexia regained her composure quickly and hastily squeezed out a smile to explain. “I just think Mr. Lancaster is already perfect enough. He shouldn’t need to find another equally perfect wife to be happy…”
“Ah, okay.” Lynn nodded. “You were so emotional just now that I almost thought you had a special relationship with Mr. Lancaster.”
“How… How would that even work?” Alexia stammered as she squeezed her handbag tightly, “How could I possibly have a special relationship with him? I’m married”
“I guess so, after all, how could Mr. Lancaster like ordinary people like us.”
Alexia frowned again with even more unhappiness in her heart, “What’s wrong with an ordinary person? Are you saying ordinary people can’t marry people like Mr. Lancaster?”
“I didn’t mean that.” Lynn rolled her eyes, “Just all these glorious people like Mr. Lancaster won’t want to fall in love with ordinary people like us.”
“Why?” Alexia asked struggling to contain her emotions.
“Why are you being so stupid? It’s because we live in a different circle from him.”
“A different circle…” Alexia repeated dully.
Certainly, she was from an ordinary family. Chaim was born into a notable family. They lived in different circles.
Not noticing Alexia’s preoccupations, Lynn continued talking, “So, I think Mr. Lancaster needs an equally perfect wife who shares common topics with him and can help him in business instead of an ordinary wife who has no ability and can’t survive in a luxurious family without him.”
Alexia’s face turned several shades of red. She couldn’t speak out against any of that as she looked toward her husband with a mixture of sadness and hope. Did he really need that kind of wife? If so, why did he marry her? Then again, he did leave her alone for three years before returning to her just for her bone marrow.
Alexia suddenly didn’t want to stay here longer.
“Lynn, I want to go back.” Alexia mumbled, becoming more downcast the longer she was there.
Before she could leave, however, Lynn grabbed Alexia’s arm.
“Why are you going back so early? Did you forget the most important part? The dance. All the women will draw lots and get to choose their dance partner.
“Wait, is Mr. Lancaster attending?” Alexia raised an eyebrow in surprise.
“Of course, he’s the reason for the party after all.”
Hearing that, Alexia was instantly dissuaded from leaving. Even though she wasn’t confident she would draw Chaim, she wanted to know who he would be dancing with.
Finally, after a long while, the speech ended and Chaim handed the microphone to Assistant Chiao who was standing next to the stage. “You will be hosting the rest of the party.”
Assistant Chiao nodded slightly and stepped on stage. “Next is the part all the ladies have been waiting for. I won’t make you wait any longer. To begin, please welcome the first lady, Alexia White!”
Alexia froze when hearing her name. “Me?”
“Yeah, it’s you.” Lynn patted her shoulder excitedly, “Aily, you’re so lucky! Hurry up.”
“Oh…” Alexia responded haphazardly and lifted her dress so she wouldn’t trip as she walked up onto the stage under everyone’s gaze.
Assistant Chiao handed the draw box to her, “Secretary White, please draw a slip of paper.”
“Okay.” Alexia nodded, quickly glimpsing at Chaim, and drawing a slip of paper from the box after a deep breath.
She was about to open it when Assistant Chiao jerked the paper away and smiled politely at her, “I’ll do it.”
Alexia’s movement paused, then she politely responded with a smile, “Then, please, go ahead.”
Alexia stepped aside and waited nervously for him to announce the result.
Then, she heard Assistant Chiao’s surprised voice, “Secretary White has good luck. Congratulations, your dance partner is Mr. Lancaster.”
When the words came out, the entire audience was shocked. Alexia widened her mouth uncontrollably, unable to believe her ears. She actually drew Chaim. But… Would he dance with her?
