Chapter 199
“Estrella.” Thomas strutted over, arching his brows smugly as he said, “Estrella, I told you Jason was in the hospital, didn’t I? I wasn’t fibbing.”
Before Estrella could even get a word in, Thomas was already chuckling. “You’re here to see Jason, aren’t you? Well, I won’t intrude on you lovebirds. I’m heading back.”
With that, he shoved his hands in his pockets and continued on his way. As he passed by Estrella, he gave her a sly eyebrow raise, as if to say, I knew you couldn’t stay away from my pal Jason; I knew you’d come to see him.
Estrella, hands plunged into her jacket pockets, didn’t miss a beat and landed a swift kick on his leg.
“Estrella, no need to play shy,” teased Thomas. Then, whistling a tune, he strolled off.
Just then, Jason quietly approached Estrella. Noticing the pallor of her face and that she wasn’t dressed for going out, he asked, “Are you sick too?”
With her hands still in her pockets, Estrella murmured a soft “Yeah.” After a yawn, she added, “I’m heading back to my room.”
As she brushed past Jason, he reached out and caught her arm. Estrella came to a halt, turning to look at him. Their eyes locked, and Jason loosened his grip slightly but didn’t let go entirely. “No one’s looking after you?” he inquired.
Struggling free, Estrella tucked her hands back into her pockets. “It’s nothing serious. The hospital’s got doctors and nurses, and Bryce will swing by.”
At the mention of Bryce, Jason’s expression visibly darkened. He used to be indifferent when Bryce hung around Estrella, but lately, Bryce had all but sworn off girls, sticking only with Estrella and Jesse, and that irked Jason.
“Estrella,” Jason called out emotionlessly, prompting a slight furrow in Estrella’s brow. “Jason, I’ve got a headache. Whatever it is, can it wait?”
They were both hospitalized, and whatever he wanted to talk about definitely wasn’t about splitting up. And if it wasn’t about that, they had nothing urgent to discuss.
Jason didn’t press further and let her walk away. He watched Estrella return to her room, her silhouette disappearing from view without a backward glance. Jason lingered in the hallway for a moment before heading back to his own room.
A few doors down, Estrella, having taken a shower, was back at work despite feeling under the weather. However, fatigue soon overcame her, and she couldn’t keep her eyes open. She tucked away her paperwork and lay down on the bed, oblivious to Jason watching her from just outside her door.
In the dead of night, as the hospital settled into silence, Estrella woke up feeling terrible.

Her head throbbed, her throat felt dry and hot, and her neck and shoulders ached fiercely. Grabbing the thermometer by her bed, she measured her temperature: it had spiked to a
fever.
Slipping her feet into her slippers, Estrella grabbed her phone and headed out, aiming to ask the night nurse for some fever-reducing medication. She couldn’t let the fever persist unchecked.
Opening her door and stepping into the hallway, Estrella realized it was only midnight. She had thought it was much later.
Rubbing her sore shoulders, she was about to make her way to the nurse’s station when she caught sight of Serene, cautiously standing by a nearby room, clutching a thermos. No need to guess-Jason was definitely in that room.
Estrella watched Serene, who seemed hesitant to enter. As Estrella continued on her way, Serene suddenly turned and caught sight of her.
