Chapter 13

The last time I heard her call me “brother” was years ago. She had been bullied by her classmates, her small hands wiping away tears as she ran to me, showing me the bruises on her

arms.

“Brother, help me…”

Seeing her tear–streaked, reddened face, I felt a pang of guilt. But then, remembering the deaths of my younger sister and father, my heart grew cold.

I looked at her indifferently. “Compared to the death of our dad and sister, your minor injuries are nothing.”

She was stunned for a few seconds before she

ran away, still crying.

From that day on, she never came to me when she was bullied again, nor did she ever call me “brother” again.

I was so consumed with grief over our sister and father’s deaths that I forgot Elena was also my family, in need of my protection.

I had two sisters, yet I failed to protect either of them.

The last thing I said to her was, “Get out of here. I never want to see you again. Forever!”

Lying there in her hospital bed, she was so still, her once fiery spirit now so subdued.

I wanted to make amends, fulfill my duty as

a brother, but it was too late. The only thing I could do now was…

Free her from her suffering.

I prepared to remove the oxygen mask.

“Noel…”

It was Lydia.

“You can’t do this. What will I do if she dies?”

“Figure it out yourself,” I replied coldly.

“No, she can’t die!”

She threw herself over Elena’s body.

I pushed her away.

“Get away from her. I’ll settle this with you

later!”.

She looked at me in disbelief.

“Brother, what’s wrong? Didn’t you always care

about me? Now that she’s in this state, she

won’t run away anymore. When I need blood, she’ll always be there. Didn’t you hate her? Now that she’s suffering like this, and I have my blood source, shouldn’t you be happy?”

I slapped her.

“Noel! You hit me…”

“Get out!”

She was frightened and took a few steps back.

I removed Elena’s oxygen mask.

Her body twitched slightly, then became still, completely still.

Her mouth, which had always seemed to turn downward, seemed to be curving up a bit now. They say a downward–turned mouth indicates a life of hardship, and she had rarely ever smiled.

But now, her mouth seemed to be turning up in

death.

She was gone.

This time, she was truly gone.

I picked her up and walked out of the hospital

into the sunlight.

Her body was light, like a leaf.

Her pale skin was as thin as paper in the sunlight. Content bel0ngs to Nôvel(D)r/a/ma.Org.

Elena, I’m sorry.
