Chapter 226

Chapter 226

“I was invited to Sonia’s birthday,” Yana said, frowning. She wasn’t familiar with Sieg and the rest. so

when Sieg had invited her, she was a little perplexed.

Candice frowned too. Although she did not mind the others, Sonia still irritated her. Just hearing

her name was annoying.

“You don’t have to go, right?” Nadia said. “It’s not like anyone made a rule that you have to.”

Yana looked even more distressed. “That’s the problem. My dad said I have to go. He’s treating it like a

blind date.” She sighed. “I heard that Alex seemed to have specially invited people from

Solaris.” She clicked her tongue softly. “Sonia sure is dignified.”

Anyone who asked within the social circle about Candice, Alex, and Sonia would know what was

going on.

Yana had long since sided with Candice.

Candice didn’t think much of the matter. After all, Sonia’s birthday was not really that related to

her.

However, she never expected that things would change so suddenly.

Candice had nothing scheduled on the weekend. She spent the whole day in the hospital with her

grandfather. His situation was quite optimistic and Dr. Brooks said that he was determined and had a

strong will to live. His recovery was much better than they had initially projected.

In the afternoon, her grandfather was moved from the ICU to a normal ward and Candice was

busy packing things.

She had just finished helping her grandfather eat dinner when Yana suddenly called her.

“Candy, you’re on leave today aren’t you?”

“Why?”

“My car broke down in the middle of the road. Can you come over and give me a ride?” Yana sounded

depressed. “I’m near the city centre bypass. I can’t get a taxi and everyone else is busy.”

Candice took a look at the time. It was already 7 pm. It was evening rush hour. Even if Yana wasn’t

near the city centre bypass, it would still be hard to get a ride.

Joe was already asleep, so she asked for Yana’s location and drove over.

“When I came over, there were still quite a few cars outside. You’re most probably not going to be able

to leave for some time, Candice.” Jackson said after a moment. “Come in. You can just hang out by the

side. You don’t have to greet them.”

Candice opened her mouth to refuse, but caught sight of Sonia following Alex. Text property © Nôvel(D)ra/ma.Org.

Alex was dressed formally in an extremely expensive black suit which was tailored to his figure

perfectly.

Under the bright lights, his air of nobility appeared even more prominent and every move he made was

elegant.

He seemed to look in their direction. Candice felt slightly stunned. Alex seemed to be looking directly at

her.

Sonia was talking to Alex, but as she noticed his gaze she looked over and saw Candice.

Candice had already averted her eyes before Sonia could see her looking.

Yana clicked her tongue. “Why are you avoiding them? You’re not the one who did something wrong!

Don’t be afraid! Be bold and show them what you’re made of, you’re the heroine of your

own story!”

Jackson’s smile was gentle, but his eyes were serious as he looked at Candice. “Candy, you can be my

partner.

With both of them encouraging her and the sight of Alex and Sonia, Candice felt brave enough to

follow their advice. She just wanted to avoid trouble. More likely than not, she would have to deal

with Sonia sooner or later.

But Yana wasn’t wrong. She hadn’t done anything wrong, so why should she hide?

Candice got out of the car and took Jackson’s hand. They walked over, and Candice caught the

displeasure that flitted across Sonia’s face.

Sonia was very good at pretending, however. She put on a smile and faked a hint of puzzlement in her

eyes. “Candice, I’m very happy that you were able to come. However, I thought that you would be

coming with Mr. Baldwin. I never expected that you’d be here with Mr. Shyan instead. I must

have misunderstood.”

Candice was still holding onto Jackson’s arm and she sensed Sonia’s provocation, but she kept calm.

“Don’t misunderstand, I’m just passing by.”

Sonia’s smile froze. She looked at Alex in a daze.

Yana spoke before Sonia could. “You must be Miss Summers. Happy birthday. Candy was just

dropping me off, I hope you don’t mind.”

“I don’t mind at all, of course not.” Sonia swallowed the words she wanted to say, her expression

slightly stiff.

“It was on your way to come over. Why not leave already?” Alex said with a cold expression. His eyes

were dark and profound like obsidian, and they exuded a cold and mysterious aura. He looked down at

Candice, his tone cold and forbidding. “You really have some skills to sneak in with other people. Can

Hanley not give you what you want, so you’ve switched targets?”

Candice felt a suffocating pressure in her chest at Alex’s words.

Sonia put on an act of kindness. She cast a reproachful glance at Alex and said, “Lex, why are you

talking like this? Candice isn’t married to anyone. Why does it matter who she’s with?” The smugness

in her eyes turned into a playful expression, shining brightly on her face. “And besides, Candice is so

beautiful, there must be plenty of people pursuing her. I even heard Manager Moreno say he likes her

too.” She glanced at Candice. “Candice, how about next time I introduce my senior to you? He’s

running his own company now, young and wealthy, and he just got divorced recently.”
